I was well pleased to receive today this M1904 first aid pouch.

It is unaltered and dated 1905. The best part is it came with the original strait hook.

Been on the hunt for one of these with original hook for years.

Pep I hope you don't mind me showing you my 1904 Pouch.

Thanks.

Ronnie

That is a nice clean one. I have a 1904 dated one but it came with the M1907 hook.

I was going to steal the hook from my latest to use on the earlier dated one, but when it came in I liked the way it displayed better.

In the mean time i used some hobby brass wire to make a m1904 strait hook. from your picture it looks like you did the same or is that hook original?

Well now Pep I do 't know if my wire is original. My pouch was purchased this way at the SOS several years ago. I assumed it was right. But now I really don't know. I would agree with you.....leave the hook in yours because that is a great Pouch. I really like the unit numbers on it.

Thanks.

Im more than likely wrong and that one is original. It just looked close to the one I did...

Compared to the latest one I got my repro is smaller gage wire and wrong color and geometry.

Pep in post #10 tell me about the middle pouch and the purpose of the eyelets below the male portion of the snaps.

Thanks.

Ronnie

I have read an article in a military historical magazine or journal that stated it is a modified M1904 pouch.

The modification was done in the 1909 time frame to a large number of manufactured M1904 pouches in stores to accommodate the new larger M1907 first aid packet.

The eyelets are where the male studs used to be. By moving the male studs up a fraction the M1904 pouch could hold the new M1907 packet. The eyelets kept the pouch from fraying.

At least this is what I remember...

If I am correct the original 1904 hooks had the patent number and date on the long section between the bends. I too have the 1904 pouch with 1907 hook. Someday I will find the elusive hook.

I do not see a patent date on this one nor have i seen one on a M1904 strait hook.

They are dated on the early Hoff pouch...The dimensions and geometry of the hook is slightly different...

That must have been where I spotted the stamping. What is the difference between the Hoff pouches and the 1904 model?

The most relevant difference is that the Hoff pouch hook is 11/16" wider. (approx.)

The pouches are made of different material and construction..

Pic for ref...
