Fake? USMC Dog tags "TL BAGLEY"

What do you think about these dog tags?
I only see one result (Truman L Bagley) during the timeframe of the tags and a 1946 roll indicates a different serial number.

Based on the stamping which is no military font I've seen they look like a reenactors set made in the last few decades.

I've seen some pretty funky stamping on legit tags in my time. But, I spent a few hours researching these as well and came to the same conclusion as you, finally found a muster roll with service numbers listed and they didn't match. The description on eBay says he was told that it belonged to a Thomas Bagley, but I found no matches. That coupled with how crudely made the actual tags are (like they really tried hard to fashion them into period looking pieces), how small the acid etched finger prints are, and the fact that they look almost brand new, I agree with you. They're probably fakes

I saw these as well. Only result was Truman L. Bagley. First of all the serial number is way off from someone who would have enlisted in 1941. And good catch on the different serial number. Also, as stated, the acid etched fingerprints I see have been crudely been applied. I also saw another fake USMC set with fingerprints just like that not too long ago. Stamping is way off as you said, could have been field made with weird font, but not this one. Lastly, cord looks brand new.

So IMO 100% fake

Well, I just received info that these are made by a member of the reenactment group the "China Marines" who was the same name and initials.

Here is a link to adding fingerprints to repro tags he made. Looks to be the same font and tag shape. He is reputable so I am not sure how the seller got his tags.

Glad we all came to the same conclusion. Sad that there is yet another seller out there that added a humped up story to a pair of fake tags

There is a Marine with that name and SN listed in the muster rolls in the early 1950s. His headstone shows WWII and Korea service.

But I'm with you on the acid print. I think that stopped in early 1943?

Wow! I just checked the final bid. Unbelievable...

Exactly. While this isn't a $10k fake helmet, as far as dog tag collecting goes, this is troublesome. Time spent researching and an ancestry account would've just saved someone $180

I agree. Ancestry and all of its accompanying services are worth the investment. I've been collecting tags for only a year or so. Seeing fake tags makes me worry. However, the current issues in the helmet community, which I belong to as well, makes me scrutinize things more so than before.
