Salvage Sailor Posted February 18, 2018 Author Share #102 Posted February 18, 2018 resized_20180217_111131.jpg Nice patches Mike, I especially like the USCGC TAMAROA, ex-USS ZUNI (ATF-95). Not only was she an Iwo Jima veteran who took casualties and was stranded on Yellow Beach while extracting LST's, she's also the heroic USCG rescue ship in "The Perfect Storm". bronxboymike Posted February 18, 2018 Share #103 Posted February 18, 2018 Thanks, I mainly got it because she was stationed in NY at the time. You can see the Statue of liberty and Brooklyn bridge in the patch. I believe unfortunately that the Tamaroa was sunk as a reef last year.
Salvage Sailor Posted February 18, 2018 Author Share #104 Posted February 18, 2018 Yep, we tried to save her for years but she was swamped during Sandy and sunk at the pier. Soon after we made preparations to reef her. Salvage Sailor Posted September 20, 2018 Author Share #114 Posted September 20, 2018 USS SEAWOLF (SSN-575) In service 1957 to 1987 USS Seawolf (SSN-575), a unique submarine, was the third ship of the United States Navy to be named for the seawolf, the second nuclear submarine, and the only US submarine built with a liquid metal cooled (sodium) nuclear reactor known as the Submarine Intermediate Reactor (SIR) or Liquid Metal Fast Reactor (LMFR), later designated S2G. Her overall design was a variant of Nautilus, but with numerous detail changes, such as a conning tower, stepped sail, and the AN/SQS-51 active sonar mounted in the top portion of the bow instead of further below. This sonar arrangement resulted in an unusual bow shape above the water for a U.S. submarine. Her distinctive reactor was later replaced with a standard pressurized water reactor, the replacement process lasting from 12 December 1958 to 30 September 1960

Salvage Sailor Posted December 7, 2018 Author Share #117 Posted December 7, 2018 Air Transport Squadron Twenty Four (VR-24) "The World's Biggest Little Airline" In Service 1946-1993 VR-24 Historical Summary: The primary mission of VR-24 was to service the U.S. Navy 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean, and when called upon, U.S. Naval Forces operating in other parts of the world. VR-24 and its Detachments delivered freight, mail, and personnel to U.S., NATO, and friendly foreign bases, ports of call, and via Carrier-On-deck-Delivery, to U.S. Navy ships at sea. VR-24 also performed life-saving medical evacuations and disaster relief missions throughout its far-flung areas of operation. To accomplish their mission, VR-24 air crews often flew in and out of airports that had only primitive communications and navigation aids, cargo handling equipment, and ground support services. Missions were often completed under the most adverse weather conditions. COD aircrews providing the vital link between land bases and ship at sea, often operated at maximum ranges from austere remote detachment sites. The men and women of VR-24 met these challenges through hard work, long hours, and innovation. VR-24 soon became known as the "world's biggest little airline" that could deliver .....................ANYTHING, ANYTIME, ANYWHERE. Salvage Sailor Posted May 5, 2019 Author Share #122 Posted May 5, 2019 US NAVAL AIR MISSILE TEST CENTER, Point Mugu, California - Gemsco 1950's Mugu beach is believed to be the site where Juan Cabrillo landed on October 10, 1542. "Muwu" was the capital village of the Chumash Indians located along the shores of Mugu Lagoon. Most of its early history centers around ranching, farming, and the famous Mugu fish camp. The history of most of the Navy's Guided Missile and Drone programs is the early history of the Navy at Point Mugu. During World War II, the Navy simultaneously had efforts underway to develop sites where both missiles and pilotless aircraft could be tested. In 1947, Congress appropriated funding to establish a permanent Navy presence here for this purpose. Since the mid-1940's, Point Mugu has had several "Center Names", all with the mission to develop, test, and evaluate missiles and related systems, and for drones to use in naval test programs.
