Thor996 Posted August 29, 2014 Share #5 Posted August 29, 2014 I doubt that was standard issue- more like sailor doodle. but still very cool,
bootsandbooks Posted August 30, 2014 Author Share #6 Posted August 30, 2014 I doubt that was standard issue- more like sailor doodle. but still very cool, Possibly, but is gives the appearance of having been mimeographed. I had to look up Ulithi but might be able to date the time(s) the USS Indianapolis was there. Odd that it passed the censors. I've seen other examples of whimsical messages. My FIL had hand copied a similar poem when he was in the Philippines and my father had sent home some similar items from Guadalcanal. When I departed Vietnam someone handed me a mimeographed letter "to the folks at home" humorously explaining or forewarning odd behavior - can't recall it all but included such as "sleeping with boots on" and "running out in the rain to catch a helmet full of water". It ended with "put some beer on ice, steaks on the grill, and get the women and girls off the street, the kid is coming home!' I've got WWII examples with almost the same prose. Here's another shipboard example.
