Belleauwood Posted August 21, 2013 Share #1 Posted August 21, 2013 This probably won't float the purist's boat on M1 Garands, but I sure like like it. These guns were cycled through Navy Armory and are of match grade quality. This is one of a couple that I own. Thought some might enjoy seeing this one. Not so easy to find anymore. This one is capable of MOA groups in better hand than mine.

Dave Posted August 21, 2013 Share #7 Posted August 21, 2013 That's a GORGEOUS piece. I'd love to take it out shooting! I've not seen one of these before...when did these get sold out of the Navy?
Dave Posted August 21, 2013 Share #8 Posted August 21, 2013 A P.S. to the above...the only M1s I was used to in the Navy were those that we used for drill. I ended up the "regimental supply officer" and was in charge of the armory...of 300+ demilled M1s. Man...I had a LOT of fun in there!
Belleauwood Posted August 22, 2013 Author Share #9 Posted August 22, 2013 These rifles were not sold through the Navy. They were awarded to Naval personnel that qualified in Matches against other branches of service as well as having to compete in a number of those matches and qualifying with high scores. Years ago, the "Secretary of the Navy" presentation rifle was a Remington Model 720 with an engraved plaque affixed to the stock. See Brophy's book on the 03. Some of the early pieces were of Springfield manufacture. The Navy still has some of these older presentation rifles, but Naval personnel can now choose what rifle they want if stocks are available and approved by the Navy. I may have my facts a little off, but that's it in a nutshell. The ones you see that come up for sale were sold by the recipient and were never available through the Navy. Some of the earlier rifles with the presentation plaque are now fetching prices in the multiple thousands of dollars. Some of the more knowledgable folks on the forum can better define the conditions of awarding the rifles. D

cplnorton Posted August 23, 2013 Share #11 Posted August 23, 2013 Also a note on these most of these are former Marine Rifles. As the Marines fazed out the M1 and adopted the M14, most of their inventory was transferred over to the Navy. For use on Navy ships and Navy boot camp. The ones they didn't get used for Navy Purposes were mothballed but were still given out as trophy rifles. The grease pencil marks on this one on the op rod is usually a trait of Marine inspection when they were put into the mothball fleet. Many of these M1's were also marked by Marine Armorers by an electropencil on the heel of the receiver with a 0-65, 0-66, 0-67 marking. This being the year they were inspected/rebuilt for storage. Really Nice Rifle and most likely a former Marine Rifle to boot!
cplnorton Posted August 23, 2013 Share #12 Posted August 23, 2013 Also I just looked at the tag again. It lists the rifle came from Crane. That is where a lot of the Marine Corps M1's were mothballed. And the Marines had a ton of M1's in the 4 million SA range. Your rifle is almost certainly a prior Marine rifle. I will have to check it on the SRS list to see if it has a for sure USMC serial number. I will get back with you.
cplnorton Posted August 23, 2013 Share #13 Posted August 23, 2013 I didn't find a hit on your specific serial. But the 4.2 million range has a ton of USMC rifles. Belleauwood Posted August 24, 2013 Author Share #14 Posted August 24, 2013 Many thanks for all the additional info. My other Sec. Of Navy has the same grease pencil mark. ( different No. ) and partially gone. D
cplnorton Posted August 24, 2013 Share #15 Posted August 24, 2013 Resist the temptation to remove the grease pencil marks. They help to establish the lineage. Most people when they got these rifles removed the pencil marks, much as I would have before I knew any different. So they are rare to find today. Really neat rifle!
