Johnnymac Posted April 8, 2011 Share #26 Posted April 8, 2011 Jack son There is no pissing match going on! I am looking for my copies of the awards and decoration manuals from the DoD 1990 and 2004. When I found the needed info I will post. Wiki info below I hope this will help. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marksmanship_Ribbon The U.S. Navy has issued two marksmanship ribbons: the Navy Pistol Marksmanship Ribbon and Navy Rifle Marksmanship Ribbon, since 1920. The pistol ribbon is currently awarded for qualification on the 9mm Beretta M9 pistol, while the rifle ribbon is currently awarded for qualification on the M16 assault rifle. The Navy issues the marksmanship ribbon in three levels — that of Marksman, Sharpshooter, and Expert. The basic ribbon is awarded for the Marksman level while the specific Marksmanship Device is awarded for qualification as a Sharpshooter or Expert. Those receiving an Expert qualification receive the Marksmanship Medal, in addition to the Marksmanship Ribbon. Prior to 1959, the Navy also issued a ribbon known as the Distinguished Marksmanship Ribbon. This award was discontinued in 1960 and had been declared obsolete by 1965. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marksmanship_Medal The Marksmanship Medal is a decoration of the United States Navy and the Coast Guard and is the highest award one may receive for weapons qualification. The Marksmanship Medal is the equivalent of the Expert Marksmanship Badge in the United States Army and Marine Corps. The Marksmanship Medal is awarded for qualifying as an expert marksman on either the 9 mm M9 pistol (Navy), .40 S&W SIG P229 DAK (Coast Guard), or M16 rifle. To qualify at the expert level, a superior score must be obtained on an approved weapons qualification course. The standard weapons qualification course normally consists of several courses of fire from one-handed kneeling, double-handed standing, and (in the case of the M16), firing from a crouched position. A superior score, qualifying for the Marksmanship Medal, is typically 285 points out of a 300 point scale. This varies slightly depending on the awarding authority and the military command which is running a particular qualification course. Those qualifying as an expert marksman are presented the Marksmanship Medal which is awarded as two separate decorations for both rifle or pistol qualifications. Those having qualified on both pistol and rifle may receive both medals for simultaneous wear. The Marksmanship Medal is worn as a full sized medal, on a dress uniform, but when worn on a duty uniform the award is displayed as the standard Marksmanship Ribbon with Expert Device. Those qualifying for the sharpshooter version are wearing a bronze device in shape of an "S" on their ribbon. In the U.S. Navy, the Marksmanship Medal is considered a successor decoration to the Distinguished Marksmanship Ribbon. Both the Coast Guard and Navy Marksmanship Medals were first issued in 1969 http://www.mymilitarymedals.com/blog/?p=
KASTAUFFER Posted April 8, 2011 Author Share #27 Posted April 8, 2011 This is out of Navy Regulation, I note you did not put establistment or effective dates Established in 1920 and awarded to all personnel of the United States Navy and Naval Reserves who have qualified as "Expert" pistol shots on prescribed courses. An unadorned ribbon signifies "Marksman". The same ribbon with a bronze "S" signifies "Sharpshooter". Navy personnel who obtain a first and second "Expert" qualification wear the ribbon bar with a bronze "E". Upon attaining the third and final "Expert" qualification, a silver "E" is attached to the ribbon. Rifle Marksman Ribbon Establishing Authority The Rifle Marksmanship ribbon was established on October 14, 1969, by Secretary of the Navy John H. Chafee when he re-designated the ribbon to the Expert Rifleman Medal to permit marksman and sharpshooters to wear the ribbon for qualifying below the expert level. Effective Dates The Rifle Marksmanship ribbon has been in effect since October 14, 1969. Criteria The Rifle Marksmanship ribbon is worn for scoring at the marksman, sharpshooter or expert level of qualification on a prescribed course of fire for the rifle. Order of Precedence The Rifle Marksmanship ribbon is worn after the Distinguished Marksman and Pistol Shot ribbon and before the Pistol Marksmanship ribbon. Devices Qualification at the marksman level entitles the individual to wear the ribbon without device. Qualification at the sharpshooter level is indicated by a silver letter "S" Qualification at the Expert level is indicated by a silver "E" on the ribbon. Navy Expert Rifleman Medal Check U.S. Navy web sites I guarantee you... these medals existed in the 30's. I know I have photos of guys taken in the 30's wearing the same medal. Does photographic proof count? Can we just agree these medals existed before the 1960s? Kurt

teufelhunde.ret Posted April 8, 2011 Share #29 Posted April 8, 2011 Can someone - ANYONE - PLEASE - post a photo of the other... The only other medal I am aware of that was authorized for Naval personnel to wear was the NRA supplied medal for participation the National Matches... There was a earlier version of this medal (worn as ribbon only 4-5 vertical green stripes) in WW2 - but that was for "Distinguished" shooters (NRA matches). I didnt want to copy the photo because its copywrited Its a classic 1930's medal with a ring top, and a US Mint wrap brooch. This brooch was NOT used on US Navy medals after 1946. http://cgi.ebay.com/ORIG-USN-Navy-Expert-P...d-/120648965795
