The 101st field artillery of the Mass & Vermont Nat Gard had that patch combo in April 2009. I have pictures from the First Muster celebration last year and this year with them wearing them.

I was told the soldiers of the 86th BCT were seen wearing the SSI + Mountain tab in Afghanistan and did a search on the net and found the answer. I also checked my reference material and the Authorized SSI of the US Army says this combination was authorized in 2006.

Saw this brigade earlier this year at Polk, which happens to be the home of the 4th BDE, 10th Mountain, and the JRTC before they deployed. There was alot of teeth gnashing from some of the hardcore active duty guys in the 10th Mountain :D

The 86th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (MTN) is in fact here in Afghanistan just as big as Dallas wearing the Mountain tab. Their HQ is just down the street from where I am located and they are a very professional group of Soldiers and we are happy to have them in the fight. What I find odd is that a few of them wear a Mountain Tab over the 1st Army patch on their right shoulder (combat patch). I asked a Major who wears it and who attends meetings in my office about it and, he explained that he was assigned to a Battalion within the Brigade before the 86th patch was approved. They were wearing the 1st Army SSI at the time and adopted the Mountain tab over their 1st Army patch when the 86th became an official SSI again. It is wrong and not authorized but I can only lead the horse to water.

On the subject of MTN tabs, 4/4 IBCT submitted the required paperwork to the Army G1 / TIOH to have a MTN tab approved for their Brigade but, it was denied about a month ago. Their reason for wanting the tab was that they are a Light Brigade where the rest of the Division is heavy and of course, they are in the mountains of Colorado.

That's all the "Mountain" tab info I can provide from Afghanistan at this time.

ATW!

Jim

Slightly off topic, but when I was deployed with the 10th Mtn Div DISCOM several years back soldiers from other units frequently asked what it took to qualify for the Mountain tab. My response was $1.50 and a trip to Clothing Sales.

Now the DISCOM is gone and has been replaced by the 10th Sustainment Brigade. However the 10th SB is sadly not authorized to wear the Mountain tab.

My friend's father is in 86th BCT as communication specialist said that all of his patches and ACU is property of Army, he wouldn't give one set to me. :( When I told him that I had got some of ACU's and patches from vets, he was puzzled.

Hey Folks,

I know this is kind of a necro post. But since I am actually part of the 86th IBCT, namely the 3/172 Infantry regiment (Mountain) figured id comment on this.

We just got back in the beginning of December after a year long deployment.

We have been wearing this patch since Late 2006 early 2007 when the 86th IBCT (Mountain) was created under the Armys restructuring plan of IBCT's. We are the only mountain specific IBCT in the Army's tool box. The 10th Mountain is light infantry.

Before we wore this patch the unit wore the first army patch with the mountain tab. At the time when we wore this patch combo we were the 3/172nd Infantry regiment (Mountain) unassigned. So we fell under the 1st Army at the time as an unassigned Infantry regiment.

To greendevilsix it is not wrong and is actually authorized, we actually have paper work for it as well as when guys went to Iraq there are orders specifically spelling out the first army patch with mountain tab.

Our Battalion also runs the Army's mountain warfare school in Jericho, Vermont where are BCT Headquarters is.

If anyone has questions id be more then happy to answer more specific info.
