rr01 Posted June 20, 2013 Share #4 Posted June 20, 2013 Besides the very well known "Kee Bird" and "Glacier Girl" stories like this one are beginning to emerge about the perils of just getting the airplanes to the war or recovering our crews who become stranded in this desolate region. Another story about rescues in Greenland is this one that may also come out as a book: http://www.airspacemag.com/history-of-flight/Stranded.html. Thanks for the great topic. Jba1973 Posted June 20, 2013 Share #5 Posted June 20, 2013 Just started this book myself, and I have really struggled, putting it down. Great book well written.
dustin Posted June 20, 2013 Share #6 Posted June 20, 2013 They do look like interesting reads. Some interesting little facts is that the AAF had formed three (1st 2nd & 3rd) Arctic Search and Rescue Squadrons. Most people are familiar with the Emergency Rescue and Boat Squadrons. The first and third were in Greenland and the North Atlantic which would have taken part in these types of rescues in these books.

Sabrejet Posted June 20, 2013 Author Share #8 Posted June 20, 2013 Seems like the US Coast Guard were major players in this particular rescue?
12thengr Posted June 20, 2013 Share #9 Posted June 20, 2013 Great read, I finished it only a few days ago. All involved were incredibly heroic and it also involved some aviation 'Firsts'. By the way another expedition is scheduled for Greenland this summer.
