DiGilio Posted September 28, 2011 Share #1 Posted September 28, 2011 I recently bought this boonie hat which has a yellow/black ribbon tied in the back (using sellers pictures). And last week I saw a VN made ERDL hat on ebay with the same yellow/black ribbon tied on it. Does anyone know if the ribbons symbolizes anything??? Corpl. Cleaver Posted September 28, 2011 Share #2 Posted September 28, 2011 I think I have heard of them being worn by guys who were short. But I could be thinking of somethingelse. Tyler
Third Herd Posted September 28, 2011 Share #3 Posted September 28, 2011 It is a short-timers ribbon off a bottle of Seagrams VO.
Third Herd Posted September 28, 2011 Share #4 Posted September 28, 2011 Seagram's V.O. Whiskey has that ribbon around the neck. Google Seagram's V.O. and you can fins a photo of the ribbon on the bottle.
gwb123 Posted September 28, 2011 Share #5 Posted September 28, 2011 Wow! Great piece of trivia! Of course, now we will see dozens of boonies with black and yellow ribbons pop into the market!
sigsaye Posted September 28, 2011 Share #6 Posted September 28, 2011 Just another observation, the boonie has a US Navy Liberty cuff stitched to the top ("Rebel Flag"). These were commonly found, not saying this hat is Navy, just has a commonly found patch that is a liberty cuff. Steve Hesson
Andrei Posted September 28, 2011 Share #7 Posted September 28, 2011 I think I have a VAL-4 jungle jacket with that ribbon. I will dig it out for the end of the week. Cool hat by the way ! I am glad you got it.
Wailuna Posted September 28, 2011 Share #8 Posted September 28, 2011 ...I think I have heard of them being worn by guys who were short... As the Short-Timer's ribbon on this Air Policeman's right pocket (at a base in Morocco ca. 1960)? An AP out of uniform? Shocking!
USMCRECON Posted September 28, 2011 Share #9 Posted September 28, 2011 Must not have been a Marine thing, at least in the mid-late 60s. I'd never herard of that before.
COOKIEMAN Posted September 29, 2011 Share #10 Posted September 29, 2011 I was an Air Policeman in Germany (38th APS, Sembach), 1960-1963. The Short-timer's ribbon was pretty common on our base during this timeframe. I have even seen some wrapped around a rectangular shape to make it look lik a standard ribbon bar. Saying goes you could wear the ribbon when you became a 2-digit midget (less than 100 days before PCS'ing).
