US 120mm Mortar

Anyone know of a model of an American 120mm mortar? Ground mounted, trailer mounted, track mounted don't matter nor does scale. That was the mortar I was mostly one. I'd like to have one in a mortar carrier but would be happy with any.

I'm not sure who has one, but I thought I saw that someone was coming out with one this year... I know Trumpeter is coming out with the M252 81mm mortar and crew, and already has one in their LAV - M kit. As far as the carrier goes, you may have to do a lil cobbling together. IF the do come out with the 120mm mortar, you can get the tried and tested M106A1 kit from Tamiya. It is the M113A1, with the turntable for the M30 4.2 in (107mm) Mortar, and the associated roof hatches... You might be able to mix match the parts from the Tamiya M106 with the Academy M113A3 to make the 120mm carrier the Army uses. I'll do some checking and see what I can find, and do a little cobbling with the Tam and Academy kits to see if the Academy and tam parts are compatible.

More to come...

Okay here is what I've found....

Zvezda makes a WWII German 120mm mortar that might lend itself to conversion... $20.75 @ Great Models.com

Azimut makes a Set Mortar 120mm VAB/VTM, $27.00 @ Greatmodels.com

The US 120mm is not a US made mortar if I'm not mistaken... it is Designated M120, and is a version of the M-65 Soltam Mortar made in Israel. There are several 120mm mortar kits out there that should be modifiable to the M120...

Hope this helps...

Thanks, guys!

I've got the M106 with 4.2 (4 deuce) but would really like one with a 120mm. I believe that is correct that it is not a US mortar but I was thinking it was Brit.

Its actually produced from the 120mm Israeli Soltam Mortar system. The M106 would not be correct for mounting the 120mm mortar. You might be able to use the interior and roof parts, but you would have to mate them to the Academy M113A3 with the external fuel tanks to model the modern 120mm carrier.

Okay I pulled out my Academy and Tamiya M113's and did some comparisons.... The Tamiya M113, M113A1, M113A2 and M106A1 all utilize the same hull... and the Academy M113 series vehicles used the Tamiya kit as a base, so the dimensions are all the same. The advantage of using the Academy kit for the conversion is that it includes a better engine and interior detailing, plus there are a lot of outside details that are in my opinion better than the Tamiya kits. As the dimensions are the same, the M106 interior floor is a drop in fit. Another big advantage is that the Academy kit has SEPARATE ROAD ARMS!!! Always a plus when posing a vehicle on offroad terrain. I'm keeping my eye out for a better look at the 120mm mortar kits to see how well they compare to the M120. Stay tuned

Guys, I do appreciate the advise! I'm gonna have to play around and see what I can accomplish. I hope I have a photo of my old track to see the markings from it.

Now for me to only find one!! I want an individual one for my desk at the office but I'd love to sometime do a diorama of my old Mortar Section in the Cav Troop or my Mech Infantry Mortar Platoon one of these days. Could try to depict each of my old buddies somewhat.

Thanks for the kind welcome Mike... it is nice to be here. I usually don't say too much but will pitch in when I can... mostly RO.

Glad that you like my site! The mortars are few and far in between as of late. Got several in process (and primed), just can't seem to find the time to finish them. Perhaps with winter approaching...

PLEASE feel free to add any input that you can. I certainly can use any help to keep it going.
