BOLO Posted August 28, 2008 #1 Posted August 28, 2008 Im in the market for a standard WWII M1 bayonet with scabbard, what is the average price I should expect to pay? I saw one at the antique store with 10" in blade with scabbard in very good - exc cond for $125 I think the blade was marked UHF or AFH ? I may be able to get it for less than $125
BOLO Posted August 28, 2008 Author #2 Posted August 28, 2008 which maker is the most common and lowest price? Im not looking for anything rare
posse Posted August 28, 2008 #3 Posted August 28, 2008 I'll guess that would be either AFH (American Fork & Hoe) or UFH (Union Fork & Hoe)... rgds Bart
Got da Penny Posted August 28, 2008 #4 Posted August 28, 2008 I would say the same as Bart P said, The price i have seen them the last couple of years has been about $125 on average. The makers that seem to bring the most money would be WT (Wilde & Tool) with Brown Grips, PAL,and then OC (Onida Cutlery). The way the market is now. You may get a deal on eBay if you look hard enough. Carey
gunbarrel Posted August 28, 2008 #5 Posted August 28, 2008 Agree with Bart P & Carey. $125 is a fair deal nowadays for one in VG-Exc condition with a nice scabbard. For example, one like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/WW2-M-1-Grand-Bayonet_...emZ300252577064
BOB K. RKSS Posted August 28, 2008 #6 Posted August 28, 2008 If it's originally made with 10 inch blade, & not a Cut-Down blade (16 inch to 10 inch) > $125.00 is a fair price for true excellent condition; as mint/unissued would be over $200.00!
BOLO Posted August 28, 2008 Author #7 Posted August 28, 2008 Agree with Bart P & Carey. $125 is a fair deal nowadays for one in VG-Exc condition with a nice scabbard. For example, one like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/WW2-M-1-Grand-Bayonet_...emZ300252577064 the bayonet I saw at the antique store is like this one, same style blade and condition $125 is probably the most I would pay

BOLO Posted August 28, 2008 Author #9 Posted August 28, 2008 I wont pay those prices for a M1 bayonet, Im going to try and find one for under $100 at the antique stores or swap meet.
Greg Robinson Posted August 28, 2008 #10 Posted August 28, 2008 Looking back over the past 12 years, since I got serious about collecting bayonets, I've seen the prices of US bayonets including the M1, rise and fall depending on time and place of sale. One of my very first came out of a local gun store and was a "cutdown" and cost me $175. There was no ebay and even the internet was still fairly new and local gun shows didn't offer much so I had to pay what the guy was asking. But then fast forward to the early 2000's and I picked up an unissued "cutdown" M1 w/o scabbard for $35. And the last factory original 10" blade I bought was around the same time and was a mint...still in factory grease..."UC" M1 with mint WW2 M7 scabbard and cost me $110. Today, in the real world you can expect to pay over $100 for an M1 w/correct scabbard in decent condition and figure $150-$200 for a "minty" example.
nuke41 Posted August 28, 2008 #11 Posted August 28, 2008 Belgian DRMO dumped a pile of them back about 2004, you could pick up unissued ones for 25-35 euro at the Ciney and Arlon shows, but they didnt last long. I picked up several, and have sold a couple of them.
militariacollector Posted August 28, 2008 #12 Posted August 28, 2008 For cut down examples, does the style of the point affect the value?
Oldcop Posted August 28, 2008 #13 Posted August 28, 2008 I picked up an uncut 1916 bayonet with 75-80% finish and a near mint sheath on eBay last month for $75.00. Good deals are still out there but rare. Dave
gunbarrel Posted August 28, 2008 #14 Posted August 28, 2008 For cut down examples, does the style of the point affect the value? The beak point seems to command somewhat higher prices than the spear point.
Greg Robinson Posted August 29, 2008 #15 Posted August 29, 2008 One thing that needs to be mentioned is that many, if not most, of the "unissued" M1's that were given away to our allies post WW2 had been arsenal refinished. Two that I got out of Thailand still wrapped in cosmoline soaked cloth had a granular black parkerization that was not WW2 original. And many of these were mated with 1953 contract scabbards.
Blake_E Posted August 29, 2008 #16 Posted August 29, 2008 If it matters, last week a cut down Utica cutlery bayo (one of the 1905E modified ones) went for 235Aus here. It was very nice and i was watching it like a hawk, but thats just too much when you can find them cheaper

Greg, The Belgian DRMO dump all seemed to be original finish, and all the scabbards were WWII. There are probably still tons of these things sitting around in arsenals. When I was in the Balkans in the late 90s the local were still using some M1 Thompson SMGs. Cheers! Jeb
