craig_pickrall Posted December 13, 2007 #1 Posted December 13, 2007 Since this forum started there have been several people that asked how to assemble this particular pack system. There is no one simple answer since the pack was in use from 1910 until 1945 or possibly longer and over these 35 plus years the contents changed. I have taken the assembly instructions from 4 different manuals to cover from 1918 until 1942. This should answer the majority of questions but if not please add your questions at the end of this and we can try to get an answer. 1918 USMC / USN version Post # 2 - 3 1931 Army version Post # 4 - 7 1940 USMC / USN version Post # 8 - 9 1942 Army version Post # 10 - 12

rambob Posted March 8, 2008 #13 Posted March 8, 2008 Craig, Here are some pictures of my 1928 pack that I made up the same as the manual illustrations. It also has the wool overcoat and raincoat attached as per the specs. BTW. The whole thing weighs a ton, when packed, but gets a lot of attention at militaria shows, when I setup there. BTW Of course, the rope should not be in the picture with the blanket, socks and underwear. Oops!!
rambob Posted March 8, 2008 #14 Posted March 8, 2008 BTW. Here is the diagram I used to pack the blanket roll. It gives a closer view of the contents. Making the roll and getting it into the pack extender correctly is a real pain, even in peacetime. The designers of this pack system must have been universally despised by the poor soldiers who had to carry this gear.
Marchville1918 Posted July 25, 2013 #15 Posted July 25, 2013 Does anyone know the purpose of the "upper " suspension rings on the first pattern 1910 pack Tail? I cannot come up with any reason for their existence----and they were eliminated from later patterns
Mitter2k1 Posted November 26, 2013 #16 Posted November 26, 2013 Here is the directions for the M1910 haversack as prescribed by the Manual for Noncommissioned Officers and Privates of Infantry of The Army of the United States, 1917.
Mitter2k1 Posted November 26, 2013 #17 Posted November 26, 2013 Cont, There really isn't much difference but this the Army prescribed method right at the start of WWI. Unfortunately this manual does not include any photos or drawings to aid in packing the haversack. I hope you guys find this useful. Thanks, Mike M.
craig_pickrall Posted November 28, 2013 Author #18 Posted November 28, 2013 Mike, thanks for adding this.
