Major General Alden Sibley Mess Jacket on eBay

I ran across this last night and immediately noticed who the seller was, w.holdings. They do note the jacket is ID'd with the general's name in it and the Essayons buttons appear to be correct for a Sibley uniform. That being said, I do not believe it should be dated 1941. I don't doubt that this is a real GO mess jacket, but I have reservations in regards to the original owner.

It is not uncommon to have earlier dated jackets like this upgraded as the officer was promoted. Can you be more specific as to your objections? I see no red flags, though the bullion knots are missing.

It's kind of interesting how much Sibley stuff is turning up right now.

 

Several plaques and a swagger stick recently on eBay. A large grouping just sold at an estate auction which later turned up on eBay.

I have seen it happen often. If the officer did not outgrow it, it would be easily upgraded as he was promoted. These things were not inexpensive, and they were almost never worn out.

 

Depending on the date the breast badge was made, this could be a real steal.

I guess the seller just makes me nervous considering his track record.

AS YOU CAN SEE he was promoted in 1940 as captainAND IN 1942 AS MAJOR so it's quite impossible he was major general in 1941...

This mess was probably made after ww2 (Korean war period i believe....) and another particulars can confirm that, first of all the wool used for this mess is not the classic 1937 / 40s wool cloth used for those kind of mess uniforms but a light wool gabardine tipically used in the mid of 1950s. and if the name is sewn inside the liner it's a classic 50s habit of tailors

 

 

EXCEPT all it's a cool uniform but FOR SURE NOT 1940S SO HIS VALUE CHANGE ALOT !

I am always skeptical now of w.holdings sales. They do have an ebay store that sales predominatly vintage clothing. I am assuming that they have some kind of supplier who dumps military stuff onto them and something about the stuff that they sell just gives me the hibby jibbies. I also believe that the fact that there is always 1 or 2 low resolution pictures and a vauge description lends to the fact that they are hiding something. For all that I will not cough over more than about 20 bucks to them.

Here is one that they just sold. In the description they also stated that the jacket was dated 1942. Which is odd since the Senior Chief rank did not even come out until 1958. I am sure that the owner was not hanging onto this jacket for 16 years.

 

This is a Great, Vintage US Navy military Chief Petty Officer's dress uniform coat/jacket. This wonderful Old piece has a Great, Vintage design, with it's Original, Bullion embroidered Senior CPO Information Systems Technician rating patch, is made of Wool Gabardine, dated 1942, from the World War II era, Rare to Find and would be a wonderful addition to any collection. This has no marked Size, but measures approx. 20" from armpit to armpit and 34" from top to bottom. This appears to be in Very Good, Crisp, Clean condition, and displays MUCH better than the picture shows.
