ClaptonIsGod Posted January 20, 2010 #1 Posted January 20, 2010 I got this at a surplus store out west about a year ago for $5, and there were two of these. One was already opened and missing one of the bandages, so I picked this one up. It is marked "ARTHUR BERTON, LONDON, FEBRUARY 1944" I am no expert on field gear, but for the price couldn't leave this. Is it US issue? British made? Perhaps ones like this were used on D-Day? Like I said, field gear isn't my area, but I'd like to learn about this piece. Thanks in advance.
OD MAN Posted January 20, 2010 #3 Posted January 20, 2010 Pretty sure its just a regular old British issue bandage, not US.
11b inf Posted January 20, 2010 #4 Posted January 20, 2010 correct as OD MAN said it's British Issue from WW2....the Aussie's also made the same Field Dressings and alot got issued and used by are U.S. Lads in the pasific war....vince g. 11b inf..

Thanks for the info! Not complete waste then, I guess, as there is a chance it would have been used by USMC and US Army in Pacific.. did I overpay?
craig_pickrall Posted January 20, 2010 #6 Posted January 20, 2010 The ones used in the Pacific were made by the Aussies. I doubt you could find one made in the UK used in the PTO by US troops. I have never seen anything about the UK made dressings used by the US in the ETO but it would be worth checking out.
boyt44 Posted January 20, 2010 #7 Posted January 20, 2010 Just like Americans carried a field dressing in those belt pouches, British troops carried these field dressings in a special purpose-made pocket on the trousers of their battledress ( although you see lots of photos where they have stuck one of these in the netting of their helmet)
Nack Posted January 20, 2010 #8 Posted January 20, 2010 I think $5 is just fine - I think I've got one too, and I think I paid $5 too
