subsystem4 Posted April 28, 2008 #1 Posted April 28, 2008 Can anybody tell me what this is? It looks like they took a 1st or 2nd class rate and cut one or two chevrons off to make a 3rd class out of it.
Lee Ragan Posted April 28, 2008 #3 Posted April 28, 2008 That looks like the dungaree rates issued back in the early 1970's. It's made of cotton, right? I don't know when those things came out or how long they were used, but I was issued some like this in 1971 when I joined the USNR.
subsystem4 Posted April 28, 2008 Author #4 Posted April 28, 2008 It is a thin material. This one looks a little older than the 70's to me but you are probably right.
Salvage Sailor Posted April 28, 2008 #5 Posted April 28, 2008 These 'crows' were used on work jackets we would wear over our dungarees. The lighter blue color is the give-away. They were sold as 1st class Petty Officer (E-6) crows, and you would trim them or fold under the red chevrons to make PO2 or PO3 crows before sewing them on. Circa late 60's early 70's
topdcnut Posted April 28, 2008 #6 Posted April 28, 2008 Hey, This is the current style for use on the work jacket, when I came back into the reserve the crow had become fat and made me miss the old crow. It was a lighter blue then back to the black version of Navy blue it looks like the ones currently worn. John

subsystem4 Posted April 28, 2008 Author #8 Posted April 28, 2008 Thanks for all the great info and pictures!
navyman Posted April 29, 2008 #9 Posted April 29, 2008 Hi, If I recall the navy change the eagle design in the early to mid 1990's. Jason
topdcnut Posted April 29, 2008 #10 Posted April 29, 2008 Hey again, I checked my uniforms and that fat eagle was worn on the uniform from the mid 80's but for some reason the jacket patches kept the old style crow longer. Your patch looks like a jacket patch from the mid 90's to date. They have been a lighter weight patch since the early 80's. T/Y John
Bill Posted April 29, 2008 #11 Posted April 29, 2008 Shown below are the ratings worn on the work coat/jacket. PO 3rd class, PO 2nd class, PO 1st class and an uncut PO 1st class for the dungaree uniform (work shirt) Bill
dpcsdan Posted April 29, 2008 #12 Posted April 29, 2008 Shown below are the ratings worn on the work coat/jacket. PO 3rd class, PO 2nd class, PO 1st class and an uncut PO 1st class for the dungaree uniform (work shirt) Bill Note the first "crow" PO3 version, which is the current eagle/crow design (somewhere around 1990) which some of us laughingly refer to as the "Parrot design"... the other examples display the older eagle/crow design. Here's a condensed timeline of rating badge eagle design: -dan
Salvage Sailor Posted April 29, 2008 #13 Posted April 29, 2008 Thanks Dan, that's a very helpful timeline having them all side by side for comparison.
mike46 Posted February 24, 2009 #14 Posted February 24, 2009 we were told that the reason for not having the rating between the crow and the chevron was that since you normally didn't wear your dress uniforms in battle, if you were captured, neither your ID card nor your rating badge would divulge your job specialty. And, I guess it makes sense. If your TS crypto guy got captured, you wouldn't want him spilling the beans Mike
