Can anyone identify this uniform?

I am new to the site and was hoping someone could tell me what uniform this is in the attached pic. My Grandfather is wearing a uniform without any insignias. The cap has one, but I cannot see it too well. Also, what is he holding in either hand? We know he served in the U.S. Coast Guard at some point, maybe WWI, or WWII probably out of New Jersey.
