jpstout Posted June 24, 2016 #1 Posted June 24, 2016 WWII Canvas case 16 x 14.5 x 1.4 inch belonging to a pilot while in VMF-321. The size and configuration suggested at first a map case or something along those lines of thought. Unique enough I guess, so thought I would post and see if anyone else had any ideas? regards...pat
jpstout Posted June 24, 2016 Author #2 Posted June 24, 2016 Other side. There may have been some printed lettering on one side, but now it is near completely faded...
northcoastaero Posted June 24, 2016 #4 Posted June 24, 2016 The case could be a rigger made item. Possibly for documents? According to wikipedia.org VMF-321 flew the F4U Corsair from Vella Lavella in the Solomon Islands. Nice item. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VMFA-321
jpstout Posted June 26, 2016 Author #5 Posted June 26, 2016 This pilot came over to the PTO on the Nassau visiting Samoa, Espiritu Santo, Vella Lavella, and Torokino (on Bougainville). Then on to Sydney, Australia to complete the 1st tour. March 1944, back to Bougainville, then Green Island, Kwajalein (CVU-98), Guam, and withdrew from combat inDec 1944. Where this was theatre, or rigger made, can only be speculated on. But given this pilots accounts, it may have been on Bougainville or Green Island.
jerry_k Posted June 27, 2016 #6 Posted June 27, 2016 Nice rigger made bag! Thanks for photos! Cheers, Jerry
