Unfortunately this grouping was parted out and I was not the winning bidder of this Soldier's field uniforms. Luckily I was able to obtain his Ike Jacket, 3 garrison caps and some other paper items. Cpl. James T Piper was a member of H Company 187th ARCT. What is interesting about this lot are the Asain made 187th Shoulder patch, the new colors of the oval the jump wings are pinned to and the three different variations of glider patches on the garrison caps. If you notice the Corcoran order form for Jump Boots and the prices in the 1950's. Only $12.87 for a pair of tan elk boots. There were two of these blank forms with the lot. There is one set of orders dated 27 January 1953 assigning Piper to Airborne Training at Fort Benning, Ga with a report date of No Later THan 1700 hours on 08 February 1953. Another order is a temporary promotion to Corporal on May 6, 1955 One last order is dated June 30, 1955 and these are rotation orders, ordering Piper to depart the Far East on 13 July 1955. It also explains that Piper is a member of a Gyroscope unit. Finally there were two copies of the 187th Newspaper the "ALL THE WAY" "RAKKASAN" Which serviced Camp Chickamaugua and Camp Wood. The issuses are No 47, Saturday December 25, 1954 and No 11 Friday, May 20, 1955. What is of particular interest in the May 55 issue is the change of rank structure to the specialist insignia. THe caption reads: " These are the non-com and specialist insignia that will be worn when the Army putd into effect its new personnel management system July 1. Below the grade of E-4 there will be no specialist or non-com desigantion" This is great lot and I am looking forward to further research on this Soldier. I have not decided if I will try to restore the uniform or leave it as is. Enjoy the pictures and comments are welcome. Thanks and a Happy and Prosperous New Year to all my friends on the Forum.
