M1 Garand Springfield #87374....which battles what theaters?

I'm brand new and I just acquired a Springfield M1 Garand.  I purchased it from a Gun shop from a private owner who I cannot get in contact with.  The rifle cost me $1600 out the door with taxes and it seems like I got a GREAT deal.  Below is what I know of the rifle so far after taking pictures of the part numbers and serial numbers on the rifle, I used AI and my own research to find out everything I could.  However unlikely I have heard that there is a small chance at tracking down the history of which battles or where the rifle was during the war.  I reached out to @cplnorton privately but also had seen that he hadn't posted a response or posted since like February of this year.  So I thought i would post this here as well.  Basically what I have is an armory rebuild WWII correct Era that was never used in Korea and has all WWII era original parts....even the sling.

Its a nice rifle. Im not knocking it, but your history or timing seems like speculation.

Because in May of 45 the priority of return to the USA was people not rifles.

Unless you have paperwork stating when it went to the arsenal for refurbishing,

then it is speculation. It could have been sent for re working in 43 or 44 and sat there?

Or someone could have assembled it from parts at home at some latter date?

The stock has been sanded and refinished in a way that

does not scream arsenal refinish. Im not an expert so take my comments with a grain of salt.

Another thing is why would a perfectly good refurbished at an arsenal, M1, not have been used for Korean service?

Or National Guard usage?

Another thing I would point out is that in the ETO, they had repair battalions and

teams rebuilding rifles (And all manner of equipment) for reissue right there in the field with the armies.

Armorers followed the armies repairing weapons. They did not need to send them back to the states.

As i said I used AI to gather info on from part numbers and researched as much as possible.  As far as the suggestions of AI of where it may have fought....yes total speculation however based on the rebuild in 1945 and the timing of it even though speculative it would make sense.  As far as why it was not used in Korea or National Guard usage I'm not sure however I can tell by looking at the rifling that it's not been fired hardly at all and it's a WWII era barrel as well as the old sights.  If it was in Korea I would think it would have seen much more barrel wear and also the sights would have been replaced with the newer sights.

Bottom line is I have no idea where it was used only what clues can tell me....that is why i'm posting here to see if someone can assist in tracking down the serial number.

I mean no offense. You are judging a rebuild on the date of the barrel?

Without arsenal rebuild paperwork, thats just an assumption? 

It could have been assembled from old parts recently? Couldn't it have been?

They rebuilt them and re furbished them in theater eto. Prob same thing in the Pacific theater?

They did not need to rush them back to the states.

The US also left a lot of them over there and gave them to other countries etc.

 Here is my thought process on why it is a rebuild

 

The "Two-Tone" Proof (The Finish)

The receiver is Green and the barrel is Black.

Civilian "Put-Togethers": From what i've seen when civilians build rifles from parts, they usually re-finish the whole gun so it looks pretty and uniform (all grey or all black).

Military Armorers: They didn't care about matching colors. They took a used Green receiver (tinted by age and grease) and screwed on a brand new Black replacement barrel (Manganese Phosphate finish).

The Conclusion: That "Green/Black" mismatch is the classic visual signature of a genuine USGI Arsenal job from what i've researched. It proves the receiver finish is original and hasn't been "faked" or re-dipped.

3. The "Cluster" Proof (The Parts Timeline)

If this were just a random "Mix-Master" rifle assembled by a hobbyist, research suggest that they would use random parts from 1941, 1943, 1952, etc. Instead, look at the timeline of the parts:

Stock: 1944

Op-Rod: 1944/45

Bolt: 1945

Barrel: June 1945

Gas Plug: 1944+

The Conclusion: Every replacement part dates to the exact same window (Late War). This tells us the rifle was overhauled in a single, specific event (June 1945) using the parts that were in the bins at that moment. A random mix I wouldn't think would be this consistent.

4. The "Survivor" Proof (What is MISSING)

This is the strongest evidence that it hasn't been messed with since 1945.

If this rifle had been rebuilt in the 1950s (for Korea), it would have T105 sights. This has Lock Bars.

If it had been rebuilt in the 1960s, it would have a Birch stock. This is Walnut.

If it had been rebuilt by a civilian recently, they likely would have scrubbed the stock. This has the visible Cartouche and Inspection Marks.

I appreciate the feedback, but the physical evidence on the rifle points in a different direction. Here is my take on those specific points:

1. On the 'Speculation' regarding the timeline: While it's true we don't have the paper logbook, the barrel date isn't just a suggestion—it's the timestamp of the work. If this rifle had been sent in for repair in 1943 or 1944 and 'sat there,' it would have eventually received a barrel from that era. The fact that it wears a 6-45 (June 1945) barrel confirms the work was performed in or after June 1945.

Furthermore, US Ordnance didn't operate by letting priority weapons sit broken in a pile for two years during the height of the war. Demand for Garands was at its peak. It is far more logical that the rifle was in service until mid-1945, worn out, and then cycled through the massive re-fit program for the Invasion of Japan immediately following V-E Day.

2. On the Stock being 'Civilian Sanded': I have to disagree on the stock forensics. The Circle P proof on the grip and the 'D' sub-inspector stamp are deep and crisp. If this had been power-sanded or refinished by a civilian to clean it up, those surface stamps would be the first things to vanish or wash out. The faint GAW cartouche combined with sharp proof marks is actually characteristic of Arsenal Cleaning (scraping/oiling), not civilian sanding. The wood-to-metal fit at the buttplate is also correct, without the 'proud metal' overhang you typically see on re-sanded stocks.

Respectfully, the sum of the parts—the physical finish, the dating consistency, and the preserved stamps—tells a consistent 1945 story.

A few more responses to what you said regarding it's usage...

 

In 1945, the US had millions of M1 Garands. When the war ended, the "fresh" rebuilds were crated, covered in heavy Cosmoline (preservative grease), and stacked in warehouses as "War Reserve" material.

 

The Korean War was much smaller than WWII. The US military didn't need all 6 million Garands. They pulled the rifles that were easily accessible or already in rotation.

Thousands of crates that were packed in 1945 were pushed to the back of the warehouse and simply never opened until the CMP received them 50+ years later. This rifle was likely in one of those "back of the warehouse" crates.

Also the condition of this rifle...The fact that it still has a square Op-Rod tab, a mint bore, and Lock Bar sights is the proof that it wasn't used."

If it had been issued in Korea or used heavily by the National Guard, it would have been worn out again, updated with T105 sights, and likely re-barreled in the 1950s. The lack of wear to me says it sat in storage.  Also if the National Guard had used it for 20 years of drill practice, the stock would likely be beaten up from handling, and the sights would almost certainly have been updated to the post-war T105 standard (which are easier to adjust). Finding a Lock Bar sight on a National Guard rifle is very rare because armorers swapped them out.

Pretty close to zero.  There are a few documents that surface containing serial numbers and it would then be by chance that your rifles is on one and that you come across it.  For example there's a ship's list of small arms that has been posted, and over in the carbine club we've posted some missing and stolen carbine numbers from the period.  For a marine, you might find 742 or the scorebook.  Up into '43, USMC issued rifles to Marines - in other words a specific rifle was assigned to them, but this became impractical.  Once in a blue moon there is firearm that comes along that can be tied to a specific person. I think there are two or three listed under Newsworthy section of the carbine club forum.  I'm sure GCA has a few similar ones for Garands.

 

As far as your speculation on rebuild, you'll have to dig a little deeper.  According to Canfield first major rebuild program began after the war was over.  As you point out, the barrel date only shows the replacement occured after the date of manufacture.    As late as the 1950s older sights were sometimes left on even during overhauls.  The reciever was completed in Oct 1942 so would have not been on an early gas trap.  My suggestion is to join GCA, or at minimum the CMP forum.  Find out if there are people that still know where CMP was getting batches of Garands from during various time periods.  If so, then send CMP a check to get the details on when yours came though,.  If nothing else you'll get the paperwork showing its a CMP gun - which for some buyers adds value.   Of course there are people who buy CMP guns simply to restore them to an earlier parts.  You could have one of those too.

I made some suggestions on how to pick up bits of the paper trail, and pointed out that there was no rebuild program during the war.  There are various places one can pick up clues as to when parts were manufactured.  If one is experienced I'm sure there are wear patterns and finish clues as well.   DCM and CMP's main focus was initially to build marksmanship.  

 

Curious that its missing its stacking swivel.

Keep in mind AI is based on the internet. It does not tap into the collective memory of human existence or brick and mortar archives or the vast hard copy paper-based data that has never been imputed, scanned, read, etc by a computer. In extrapolates on woe-fully incomplete data and should regarded as a novelty at this point.

Yeah thanks I understand.  Again I don't consider what it is speculating the gospel truth however I do think it helps give insight to what possibly could have been this rifles journey.   That's why I'm here asking if anyone has access to the few serial numbers that have been tracked.

back to the states in May, for repair in June? When they had all the means to repair them 

in the ETO. And with the war ended in Europe, plenty of time to repair equipment.

Its not like there was a shortage of M1's at the end of the war.

I believe there was an oversupply. Like every other war material.

Youre rifle is like a lot of things people collect. Meaning without paperwork, or gettiing it from a vet or their family,

some things just remain unknown. Ive got a rifle I am speculating on right now, but I cant prove a thing.

Just circumstantial evidence on and with the rifle. I know what I think, but thats not certain proof.

To answer your question this one had the barrel swapped which as I understand requires a massive heavy duty barrel vise bolted to a concrete floor or a heavy bench a specialized receiver wrench to prevent warping the receiver in a set of precision headspace gauges if a field armor tried to swap the barrel with hand tools he would twist the receiver and ruin the gun this work was strictly limited from my understanding to third echelon depos or large rear area bases or stateside arsenals. 

 

Also the black finish on the barrel is manganese phosphate a field repairman wouldn't have made the barrel black The fact that the barrel has a pristine uniform black finish I pretty sure means it was dipped in a factory tank before being installed in my opinion all this forensic evidence contradicts this being a quick field repair a field armor would not have the heavy barrel vices or receiver wrenches to perform a rebarrel without warping the action also the chemistry of the finish proves a facility was involved you can't apply a hot dip magnese phosphate finish in the field and the fact that the barrel carries a factory fresh dip finish that contrast with the zinc phosphate receiver proves that this part was processed in an industrial dip tank characteristic of a depot or arsenal level overhaul. Again I'm no expert just can go by everything I've read online about this stuff.

 

 

Again you ask about paperwork how many Garands that people have include any type of paperwork with the history of the rifle That's like finding a unicorn.... All I can go on is what I see and I see evidence that suggest an arsenal rebuild not a field repair I could be wrong I never presented this evidence saying that this is what happened to the gun or that I'm certain this is the history of the rifle.  

 

I'm waiting for my clips for the rifle I ordered some and they were supposed to come today but I don't think that's going to happen BUMMER 😞

Also when the divisions of soldiers were shipped back they brought their rifles back and turned them in to be fixed and rebarreled and redeployed.  From what I've read this is how we had warehouses and warehouses of m1s after the war being stored some being sent to Korea and some sitting in warehouses until CMP purchase them or private collector

I love that Ernie Pyle quote—it really highlights the ingenuity of the Ordnance crews in the field. There is no doubt they could fix anything to keep the fight going.

However, there is a distinct difference between 'Repair' (keeping a gun running) and 'Overhaul' (restoring it to factory standard for a new theater).


1. The Logistics of Redeployment: My understanding of the 'Green Project' (the redeployment from ETO to PTO) is that Divisions were rotated back to the continental US for leave and refit before shipping to the Pacific. It was standard procedure for small arms to be turned in and cycled through Stateside Arsenals during this window. It wasn't about 'rushing rifles back'—it was about the rifles following the units that were coming home to refit.


2. The Industrial Constraints: While field units could swap a barrel if absolutely necessary, they could not replicate the factory finish. The Ernie Pyle quote describes mechanical work, not chemical engineering. The finish on this barrel is a uniform, hot-dip Manganese Phosphate. You simply cannot run industrial Parkerizing tanks 'under a tree' or in a tent on a beachhead. That requires a static facility with temperature-controlled acid vats.

If this were a field repair done by a brilliant mechanic in France, the barrel would likely be in the white, painted, or cold-blued. The fact that it wears a pristine Arsenal-grade Manganese finish is what points to a Depot or Springfield rebuild rather than a field fix."

There is also a major timeline issue with the 'Field Repair in Europe' theory regarding the barrel date itself.

This barrel is stamped 6-45 (June 1945). That means it was manufactured at Springfield Armory in Massachusetts in June.

For a field unit in the ETO to install this barrel in June 1945, that heavy steel component would have to be manufactured, inspected, crated, shipped across the Atlantic, distributed through the supply chain, and delivered to a field tent in France—all within roughly 3 weeks. That speed of logistics simply didn't exist, especially for 'Class II' spare parts after V-E Day.

It is far more plausible that the rifle was stateside (likely returned via the Green Project) and re-barreled at the very Arsenal where that barrel was just produced. A 6-45 barrel installed in mid-1945 strongly suggests the rifle was at the source."

Here is what i just found out thanks to @cplnorton

Above is the SRS (Springfield Research Service) data for the serial numbers immediately surrounding mine (the 87xxxx block). The data paints a very clear picture that contradicts the idea that these rifles were left overseas.

 

Proof of Return to the US (The Raritan Connection) Multiple rifles in my immediate serial block (e.g., 869532, 876789, 880326) are listed as being at Raritan Arsenal (New Jersey) on 11/18/1946 for 'Air Gage Tests.' This to me is proof that this specific block of rifles was returned to the United States immediately after the war for mass inspection and processing. They weren't left in a field in Europe or rebuilt in the field. They came home to be checked and stored.

 

The Pacific / Marine Corps Cluster Looking at the broader neighborhood of this block, there is a distinct pattern of usage by Fleet Marine Force, Pacific (FMF PAC) and Pearl Harbor detachments (e.g., 878187, 885343, 890258). While a 'neighbor' doesn't guarantee my rifle's destination, it shows that the 87xxxx production block was heavily allocated to the Pacific Theater and USMC contracts.

 

When you combine the forensic timeline with this SRS data, the story is 99% clear:

The rifle was born into a block heavily used by the Marines in the Pacific.

The SRS hits for Raritan Arsenal prove this block was shipped back to the US in 1945/46 for processing.

My rifle's June 1945 barrel fits perfectly into this 'Return and Refit' window. It came back, was identified as 'shot out' (likely from Pacific service), was re-barreled at Springfield in June '45, and then stored—just like its brothers at Raritan."

Its really nice of @cplnorton to share the closest snip from SRS Books. I think you're really stretching to make the evidence fit your narrative.  That's not to take away from what you bought - which seems to be a  very nice example - I'm not judge of originality on these.

 

873,741 was produced in Sept of 1942 and probably completed that month or next.  When finished the stock was stamped indicated final approval and it shipped out in a box with 10 others.  Depending on how Springfield's flow process worked (and someone probably knows), the others in the box probably had close serial numbers.   That box of 10 went somewhere. 

 

874,818 probably left shortly thereafter and late in March 1950 was turned in by the Pennsylvania National Guard.

 

There's no way from this information to connect an 873,xxx rifle to a shipment to Fleet Marine by skipping over 1000s of rifles in between which then show up in 1946 - 51.  In fact we know a bit about how the USMC issued M1 rifles over the period of adoption.

 

Look at some of the serial numbers that have grouped together at known locations and time periods.  For example the 50 or so pulled from the 38th Inf Div turn ins for service used in the I948 Air Gage test (google it).  Or the ones shown in the ship's log. here 1957.  My observation is tht at best, small groups of numbers stayed together over time.
