Here is another VT-34 Insignia that is accounted for. This is one of my Dad's, he has several more, plus a handful of reproductions that were made for a squadron reunion circa 1980s. I will be asking him about this bloke, I have met several pilots from VT-34, and this name is not familiar to me. I'm certain Dad has a few squadron rosters.

 

From what I have been told about VT-43s Insignia, these were actually made post-VJ Day, but I cold have heard that wrong, once again, I'll try and remember to ask about this as well.

I don't have any of the reproduction insignias with me, they are all packed away at Dad's place. Just off the top of my head, they were a bit smaller than the real insignias, plus they "justed looked modern" LOL, really can't explain it, but they did stand out along side real WWII era insignia, if that makes sense? I think he wants to hang onto the originals that he has, but I'll ask anyway.

I just got off the phone with my Dad. He knew Lt. Robert Wiegand well, said he was a great person. My Dad also flew a few times with him, but he was not the crew he was normally posted with.

 

My Dad said that Lt. Wiegand was from Toledo, Ohio and my Dad was from Flat Rock, Ohio, about an hour away (by modern highway speeds), those two and another bloke from Toledo checked out an Avenger to get some flight time when they were posted at an Air Station in New York (I think it was NY?). This was after V-J Day and they all had been in the Pacific during the latter part of the War and were all fairly homesick, so they flew to a small air field in Toledo and reported the aircraft had an oil leak LOL! That event all turned into a fiasco, but got sorted out by VT-34s X.O. LOL!

Fantastic grouping! Great that you were able to keep it all in one place, Kurt. And thanks Mark for relating the facts of your dad's service to the story of Wiegand's. Brings just that much more of a human face and emotion to what all ready is a fantastic grouping.
