NEW MARINE RAIDER INSIGNIA APPROVED

I, for some reason don't like it.

Agree-

Notice that they omitted the skull in the center of the WW2 Raider patch design. (I guess doing so would suggest they condone violence, aggressiveness and intolerance - big "no no's" in today's world.)

The designer was not a Raider...

I don't like it as well. I also don't like the idea of a special insignia as it singles out the wearer as being special. I was taught at Parris Islands that all Marines were the same.

Agree somewhat, but Marines wear various aviation wings, parachute badges, etc. so why would this be any different?

I agree. Looks way to flashy for a Marine. I also agree 12A54, they should be recognized for their special skills, as are SF, Rangers, Pararescue, SEALS, etc. A nice winged skull would have been cool but as KURT pointed out not in todays PC world. Everyone wants to be safe, they just don't want to see how it's done.

Very rude pose for an eagle. It will soon have a nickname.

The "Pole dancing Parrot" came to my mind......(no offense intended to anyone!)

Turkey was my first thought

Yeah, it strikes me as Old Imperial Russian or Yugoslavian in appearance.

Thank you. I knew it reminded me of something.

The shield seems to lend itself to skull engraving....

#14

the EWS ?

Eagle With Stinger?

Eagle with Schlong?

the Eagle angles the dangle?

not a flattering or strong pose for an eagle AT ALL.

whoever designs this stuff obviously has no proper design training.

I would have thought the EGA with the stilleto through the middle of it

SSI were removed because of the principle that a Marine is a Marine

MOS specific insignia was turned down for the same reason...as recently as last year with the crossed rifle debate

Recon and Force Recon have no special insignia...the wings and scuba bubble are not a Recon exclusive combo

This thing is unnecessary.

....a Marine is a Marine. This thing is unnecessary.

Agree, this looks like it's from a JROTC uniform.... for sword fighting in a H.S. Gym.

#18

lot of noise being made about MARSOC these past couple years...SSI, this thing...whatever happened to quiet professionalism from the Spec Op community?

"The insignia was designed by a Marine captain who is a member of MARSOC, according to military documents."

#20

well I guess he had 12 weeks "communications" training.....

I understand getting their input but wouldn't some of this stuff be better served to artists?

#21

We were asked to submit proposals for the Combat Instructor Ribbon...they didn't take any of our suggestions, so outside artists are brought in from time to time

It may have been our border-line belligerent designs, though.

Here's the official story why the Raiders are not using the skull, though I'd venture there's a lot of politics behind it not being verbalized

I am not a fan of the design however, I remember gold wings and scuba bubble. They were more qualification designators and not a unit insignia. I agree that it was not a recon exclusive insignia (anglico), but you did not see a motor T guy with crossed tire irons.

Saw this in use for the first time a couple days ago...still not a fan. Nor was the Marine wearing it

I've given up even trying to match a pair of socks, but that insignia doesn't strike me as emblematic of the Raider tradition - or any warrior vocation for that matter.

The Eagle, our national symbol, should survey from atop its chosen perch. Nothing should be above it's head, just as we should put nothing before our country. The eagle's position and attitude make it look like it's struggling to hold on.

The lack of skull is an insult, and the gobbledygook explanation in the article was a bolo.

Next time, let the grunts design the insignia. In an attempt to save it, I'd add a motion sensor to it, that plays an MP3 of "The Marine Corps Hymn" anytime someone walks past it.
