Sabre sorry about your country's loss. What a great leader Mrs. Thatcher was. I never will forget her leadership during the Faulklands War. Next to Ronald Reagan she was my favorite World leader.

Thank you Ronnie. Alas, there will be many of my countrymen/women who will not feel at all sad about her passing. No British political leader of recent years has polarized public opinion as much as she did. I must be honest, I wouldn't call myself a "fan" either. Her legacy still lives on in the irrevocable changes her policies made to British society. As you say, she and President Reagan had a close working relationship which contributed to victory in The Cold War.

I think she was responsible for keeping England out of the European Union. That looks more and more like a very good move.

I have to say I share Ian's sentiments on "The Iron Lady" She was without doubt a force for change in the UK,and took a bold stance over the Falklands,but many of the changes she brought about have had a lasting impact on the lives of many here,not always for the best.

But what about the country.....your country is it better off today than it was before her? After all is in the end all about the country.....isn't it? That is a real question. I only know what I remember reading about her and hearing about her on the news. I know that I loved her for her tuff stands against Socialism.

Ronnie, Britain was actually a part of the European Union before she came to power. In fact it was an issue which divided her party. It still does!!

Ok as my son says.....my bad. For whatever reason I didn't think that England was a member. I hope that Great Britain doesn't turn into Greece. That's a whole different topic though.

That's a tough one to answer Ronnie,and probably not a discussion for this forum but many still feel very bitter about such things as the sell off of council homes,and the treatment of Britain's coal minors.

 

I'm 34 so only have vague memories of some of these things,and it's hard to define just how different things might have been without her,but IMO Britain as it stands isn't in great shape,at least in certain areas.

Matt is right. I could add a bunch of posts about Mrs T. and her legacy...I'm 60 so I remember it all vividly...but it's really beyond the scope of this forum and would only get locked up anyway...as indeed it might do yet?! (But it was fun whilst it lasted!)

I think people's views on Mr's T depend on where they are situated in the Country. I live in London and she was good for us -not so good if you live in a Coal mining area. Still more Balls than anyone we have had since.

What about the Falklands War. Did she make many of the decisions or did she turn it over to the military experts?

Like all good leaders she would have listened to her senior commanders....and then called the shots!!

BTW...to maintain an American "flavour" (flavor?!) here...note the .50 cal "Ma Deuce" in service with the British military as pictured above. It was used in an anti-aircraft role during the Falklands War. It's still deployed by the British Army in Afghanistan today. A superb weapon and a perfect example of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!" philosophy!

As with all world leaders, she had her "stage presence", and her "home front". The British people can be the only judges of her home front, the world felt her stage presence! A force to be reconded with!

Still more Balls than anyone we have had since.

Can't argue with that!.

A virulent anticommunist and an unwavering ally to the the United States. Need I say more? She will be missed ......

Certainly one of the world's great post-WWII leaders. She fought communism and socialism as hard as anyone... and great example for all.
