If I remember correctly, these handles were made for the commercial market. I really hope I'm wrong. That's one coool M7 bayonet.

First time I saw these handles for sale was in shotgun news in the early 1980s

 

I always liked the design. Some are marked inside the grip,if you remove it their maybe

A makers mark.

 

I think the company also had a knuckle thing that attached to

1911 type magazine too.

While they are somewhat rare, they were not actual-Issue.

Though, they may well have been available, as commercial-private-purchase, during The Nam era.

 

From what I have been able to discern on the research of these, over the last several years, they were made in a small foundry in Northern Kentucky; [...with a possible/apparent desire towards securing a Gov't Contract for.]

Seem likely to be first made in the early-to-mid '70s.

 

[A friend of mine has one on display. He had a VN SF buddy, over to his place, and his friend did a 'double-take' when he saw it, He said that he carried one, while deployed.]

 

Cole IV, p.110:

 

While Cole states that "the knucks made of black plastic"; I believe that this may have been an 'erroneous-oversight'; (his continuing-on with the 'theme' that the original black plastic left grip panel was still used.)

It would seem that much-any-form of "plastic" available, during that time-frame, would be not be strong/resilient enough, for a set of knuckles, besides.

I have only seen these made of cast aluminum, and painted black. The inside of grip-panel is most-usually index-marked; though not with maker.

P.S./BTW "Cromwell": Go find yourself a screwdriver. The grips on "your" bayonet are mounted upside-down/backwards.

I have one of these. The guard is marked "US M7 / BOC". It is also marked on the inside of the handle like the one in Cole's book.

 

Does yours still have the maker mark on the guard?

Interesting!...theres an exact same type of M7 knuckle knife for sale on the local craigslist, they want $120 for it, is that a really good price or what would you expect to buy one of these for?....i was thinking about grabbing it but have no clue to if value and if i ever wanted to sell/trade it wasnt sure if it was worth getting?....thanks....mike

Thanks for the advice!....i thought it sounded a bit high, the story is he got it from his uncle who was two tour SF along with his helmet and sog knife that he is keeping....sounds like he wont budge off the $120......mike

I've seen really good ones go for $200. But they can be found for much less.

Although I'm reasonably certain that such an M7 bayonet, w/added knuckle set, could be found at a "flea-market" for 20 bucks; I have not seen one of any-near-recent online offering, by any "knowledgeable/reputable dealer", for less than $165 and up.

Yes, it is still possible to find "a good m7 at around 30.00-40.00". Although, a quick-poke-around @ e=Pay, will find that this price-range is also rather 'antiquated'. ...At least for an example that is in any 'sorta-close' to reasonable-high-percentage condition.

Many decent M7s, "found-there", 'Start at, and/or, (BIN)' on the plus-side of $50.

These are 1 style , I have seen 3 styles of these type knuckle grips.

 

Seen them made in a composite,aluminium & brass.

 

The company I purchased my grip from also made a grip that used a 1911 magazine, I had one but can't find it,yet.

I also have a scan of the original ad , I am digging but my pic database is over

I have the early version from shotgun news & the reversed one, so we are talking about 2 different knuckles.

I have The brass,aluminum & composite versions.
