Unless you are wearing the masks around, the asbestos isn't likely to become shredded, airborn, and inhaled. Like lead paint, if kept as a collectible object, the scary substances won't jump out and hurt you. I have even used an intact asbestos blanket to protect parts of an airplane from damage when welding. I also have some lead hammers and sheets sheets for padding items in the shop setting. Many things can be harmful in some states(not location) and yet be perfectly stable, even able to be handled. Don't eat it, grind it up and snort it, etc and you can preserve it just fine.
