January 26, 201115 yr #1 Recently got this group of submarine badges which includes the gold dolphins, two patrol badges including a deep wave and a small cap size set of dolphins. These came from the estate of Admiral Chester Carl Smith one of the stars of the Pacific submarine war. He won a Navy Cross, Silver s Star and other medals. The medals' location is unknown.
January 27, 201115 yr Author #4 Garth, Nice finds :drool2: Could we see the backs of the sub badges? Jason Jason, I'll get my camera out and take some but can't tonight. Garth
January 27, 201115 yr #5 Those dolphins are awsesome. I think WWII officers dolphins are under-rated by most people. Kurt
January 27, 201115 yr #7 The badges are sweet. I hope one day you will find the medals, that's the only thing that could make this group better!! Happy for you Garth.
January 27, 201115 yr Author #8 Those dolphins are awsesome. I think WWII officers dolphins are under-rated by most people. Kurt Kurt, I couldn't agree more. Dolphins have several manufacturers plus theater made versions. One of the very scarcest WW2 submarine officer badges is a wartime submarine Medical Officer, almost impossible to find. Garth
January 27, 201115 yr Author #10 Garth, What is the purpose of the other two submariner insignia? Paul, The other two badges are war patrol badges, each star is for a patrol. The two designs are just variations. The smaller is what could be called the "standard" type and the other is what is called the "deep wave" style. Garth
January 28, 201115 yr #12 Nice group. Looks like you picked up a vanguard patrol badge, what looks like an amico patrol badge and mini dolphin, and a different full size set of dolphins. From what I can see the large dolphins might be post war- In the picture he's wearing a set of H&H or gemsco deep wave dolphins. Regardless a nice set of insignia!
February 10, 201115 yr #14 gotta love that badges. I like the submarine badge, I have one myself but they were my uncles when he served in the nuclear subs.
