August 27, 200718 yr #2 Hi Bruce, Other that Mike Detrez (and I presume it's his bag you're showing), I really don't know anyone that has the large bag. Most have the small one with metal box, but as we've discussed before, the large one was mostly blown up with the Explosive charges... Johan
August 27, 200718 yr Author #3 Hi Johan, Yes I agree with you, this is a rare bag, mainly because of the reason you stated that most were blown up with the blocks they carried. You are also right, the bag in the picture was taken at the DMC museum in Normandy, but having compared it with the one in Michel's book At The Point Of No Return it is not the same, so I would say Michel has at least two of these bags. I have also seen one in the D Day museum at Omaha beach.... So was curious to know if any of the experienced collectors on the forum knew of any others or had one in their collection that they wouldn't mind showing us pictures of... Thanks Bruce
August 27, 200718 yr #4 This is indeed a rare bag but it was not intended to be blown up. I think you have it confused with the satchel charge bag which was a very light weight flimsy bag that was placed, primed and detonated. This one was better made to carry the accessories, blasting caps, primers, det cord, etc. Granted, many of them were probably left behind when they were empty but I don't think you can say that is why they are rare.

I believe the smaller bag of the set was used to carry the detonators and such and this slightly larger bag was used to carry the TNT blocks. I believe GI's did not go thru the trouble of getting the blocks out of the bag before blowing those blocks up.... That's why you see plenty of the smaller bags, but never these larger ones... And yes, they are completely different from the satchel charges... Below picture of the smaller bags in my collection, which contain the metal box with detonators, and such..... These look identical to the ones shown above, but are smaller!!
