April 2, 201016 yr #1 Antiques Roadshow had a really nice CW Colonel's grouping on this week. A familiy member brought it in to be appraised. Union officer's frock and forage cap. April 2, 201016 yr #2 I saw that, very nice...!! I actually thought it would have gone for more, IMO...the caps were very nice... If that had been a Confederate uniform, Whoa......a small fortune.
April 2, 201016 yr #3 Also saw that.Very nice. We have an area older gentleman who has his grandfathers Spencer carbine and his diary.The soldier was in the group that pursued and captured Jefferson Davis.He would bring it into area gunshows from time to time. RD

Is the unit who pursued Jeff Davis the 97th Illinois. I have a civil war/GAR group to a member of this unit. Their commander Colonel Victor Vifquain attempted a snatch of jeff Davis from Richmond early in the war but it was unsucessful. Their is abook based on Vifquains notes and writings regarding this attempt. He later tried to intercept his getaway train late in 1865 but again to no avail. RD

April 3, 201016 yr #6 I also watched this show. I had a special interest in this as my great grandfather also fought with the 108th NYVI. The unit history of the regiment is one of the best ever published. I wish the appraiser would have given a "street value" to this group rather than an insurance value. If this was for sale at 25,000 I would be first in line. It also would have been interesting to have had a name put to the lot.
April 3, 201016 yr #8 That should go into a museum. This is a wonderful grouping! :fear: ... those items are in the shape they are because the family took good care of them. A good collector will do the same. A museum will more than likely put it somewhere so the moths can open a much fest upon it and nobody will ever see it again.
April 3, 201016 yr #9 That should go into a museum. For what? To collect dust? Fall into disrepair? Many collectors care for and preserve historical artifacts better than most museums.
April 4, 201016 yr #10 That particular Roadshow was rerun this evening and I saw it....what a terrific grouping. Even the officer's sash was not faded and just about like new.
