One of the things I really like about the old Marine Corps patches is the great variety of materials and construction used to make them.

Here are a few that I picked up recently together: one to show off, another with a question and the last one with hope of finding out what it is.

The first is a reversed 3rd Marine Division, the second is a 3rd with a canvass material glued on the backside.

 

The last patch (the winged clock) I can't find in any of my references and would be very grateful if someone could ID it for me.

 

They are all embroidered on red felt that seems to be consistant with others I've seen. The one with the canvass backing is unusual though, it came with another that is almost identical that is backed with a courser almost burlap-like white backing glued on. There's no mesh backing underneath like you find on American-made felt patches. It's similar to a 5th Airforce I have that I believe is Aussie-made embroidered on twill. I was wondering if the 3rd Divisions made like this were theatre made patches or....?

The winged patch is a radio show premium patch from Captain Midnight. It was sent to listeners who sent in seals from Ovaltine and dates from 1942 to 1944. Here is a website with the premiums, the patch is located about half way down the page. Captain Midnight Premiums
