Question for Sailors

The Asheville was sunk by the Japanese in the Indian Ocean because she could only average 9 knots. A problem with her one engine led to her downfall since she wasn‘t designed to fight other warships. However, the Asheville was fitted with auxiliary sails, and since there are trade winds at that latitude, why wouldn’t the skipper have used them? The Asheville went down on March 3rd, 1942, and I’m wondering if this is to late a date for sails to be in a sail locker? Any and all help most appreciated.
