One of the first things to understand is the difference between a cut edge patch and a merrow edged patch. Once you know the differences you should be able to at least know the eras that the patches were made. There are some good topics on here on the cut edge patches and merrow edge insignia. The patch on the left is a merrowed edge while the patch on the right is cut edge.. Leigh

Concur that the "cut" edge is post WW2. Merrowed edge (large rib around the outside) patches replaced cut edge patches. I informed you, cut edge patches were used from WW2 into the 60's just because they made so many of them.
