I always thought they were done when imported back into the US.  I have this one for years.

Mine looks exactly like yours. GaryCunningham reports the top-plates were "soldered"(Frank Trzaska's Site, Gary Cunningham's Bayonet Points#11)

However, mine shows no evidense of this. Possibly spot welded...
