April 1, 20251 yr #1 Hello all, I grabbed this canteen for the cover while I was at an antique store today as the price was right. I suspected it was one of the 1952 USMC covers although the markings are pretty faint. The canteen is from 1993. Does anyone have any thoughts of the date range of one of these? Thank you very much, Hayman
April 1, 20251 yr #2 Nice cover, unfortunately the USMC stamp fades easily on these. I've only ever seen them dated 1952, and the only maker O know of is Collette Mfg. Co. Justin
April 1, 20251 yr Author #3 Thanks, Justin. I actually passed at first because of the markings being so faint but the USMC got the best of me. I will find a closely dated canteen for it and will make a nice display out of it. Hayman
April 8, 20251 yr #4 I believe Collette made items into 1953 as well. Have seen a US (Army) Collette 1952 canteen cover somewhere...
April 8, 20251 yr Author #5 Is there any consensus on if these Collette covers were stamped lightly to begin with or is it an ink that faded with time? In my very limited experience I have only seen the faded type. Hayman
April 8, 20251 yr Author #7 $15. It came with a 1993 plastic canteen and a Japanese made belt. I guess it made up for all the other times I have overpaid for things at this particular antique store😀
