This 6 1/2" x 8 1/2" photograph was shot with a large format camera and has high resolution showing fine details. Look at their high altitude flight gear.

Looks to be an earlier war era photo than later war.  The CG Sweeting books on USAAF flying clothing and USAAF flying equipment should help to ID the clothing and provide dates for the standardization and modifications of them also.

B3 jackets and A6 boots. Would guess 1943 and appears stateside when doing crew training prior to assignment

Here is another crew. The interest for me in this shot is that I knew the navigator. Earl Triebes.

Far right holding the clipboard. He was a commercial artist in Chicago. I worked with Earl in the

early 2000's. When I met him, he was a salesman for the studio. He became a pilot

for his own enjoyment after the war. He has his own plane for many years.

I went to lunch with him a

couple times and he told me about some of his experiences..

He passed around 2004 - 2005.

Great guy.

As an fyi, Sweeting and many others used a Type Designation Sheet (TDS) for dating but they often were incorrect. The link above goes into more detail.

I want to thank you Mac. For posting this because it reminded me of my friend Earl.

Much appreciated. Earls uniform sold this September, I found these pics yesterday.

Unfortunately I missed it.

He even had his monogram logo inside! I found out yesterday from the seller at Oak Leaf Militaria,

that Earl was a long time collector of militaria.

I was not a collector back then so I never knew.

Earl Triebes was a good Man a kind Man. A gentleman in the truest sense of the word.

Earl was a member of the 303rd Bombardment Group.

Hells Angels.

 

The last pic, Rooster, appears to be later in the war. The jackets are B-10s and B-15s. Good stuff. Based on the caps, I would guess '45 but that's just a guess.
