Just got this one in today. Uniform identified to General Lyman L. Lemnitzer during his time as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff between 1960-1962. Lemnitzer had an incredible career in the Army spanning from 1918 all the way until his retirement in 1969. During WWII, he was assigned to Eisenhower’s staff and helped plan out allied landings in North Africa and Sicily. Towards the end of the war, he was part of the staff tasked with negotiating the Italian (and later German) surrender. Following the war in 1950, Lemnitzer went through airborne training at the age of 51 and was placed in command of the 11th Airborne Division, only to be reassigned to the 7th Infantry Division in November 1951. During his time as Commanding General of the 7th Infantry Division, he was awarded the Silver Star Medal, along with various foreign decorations. Lemnitzer’s career in the 1960’s took a bit of a controversial turn, as he was heavily involved with the failed Bay of Pigs Invasion and was a known proponent of US military involvement in Cuba. In 1962, he approved Operation Northwoods which proposed the use of false flag terrorism acts to enact credible military action against Castro’s communist regime. President John F. Kennedy refused to follow through with Operation Northwoods and several months after the refusal, Lemnitzer was denied another term as chairman. Despite what had transpired earlier that year, Lemnitzer was appointed as commander of the US European Command and as NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe. He held this position of command until his retirement in July 1969.
