Seeing such gratuitous VN news print on the back of a patch supposedly made in VN is a huge red flag for me.  Most having that are fake  - especially on Ebay.  And even more especially if the patch is photographed sitting on a map of VietNam.  And a 3rd especially if there are brown tea stains on the patch. (in the history of patches, tea has NEVER been spilled on a real patch).

However, I acquired a VN-made patch directly from a vet a few weeks ago.  It has newspaper backing.  So, my red flag is now a little less bright.   I now keep more of an open mind when I see the newspaper backing.

Once you figure out the different patch makers construction it's fairly easy to tell where patch was made and if legit or not.

I learned the hard way but got wise real quick.

Happy hunting

stay clear of that thick embroidery thread.

Peroid patches were made quite nice with fine stitching and great detail. Hope that helps.

I agree that newspaper-backed patches deserve scrutiny but they were definitely used.  I previously posted a thread on some patches that were made in Vietnam, but backed in Chinese-language newspaper!

Most of the repro newspaper patches were nothing more than a piece of a page from a book. They knew the Americans would not be able to read Vietnamese, so they just used whatever was handy. Dave
