March 2, 20251 yr #1 I have this Officers Visar Khaki hat . At least that I think it's called ?? It's dirty . Can you safely clean it with anything , especially the top ? Or is it dry clean only ? Does the number on the inside brim mean anything , H7271 ? Manufactures code , part number ? THANKS !
March 2, 20251 yr #2 Dry cleaning hurts leather. The hat actually looks pretty clean. The H7271 is the owner's laundry mark. There's a web page where you can use it to find out who might have owned it.
March 3, 20251 yr #5 I believe 268th C.A. is right, if you look closely you can see the imprint of the EM hat badge on it. The mohair braid was added to EM hats in 1947. It should be a combination cap, meaning the cloth cover is removable from the frame and visor so it can be changed from khaki chino to OD wool so you don't need two complete caps. The cover is cotton so it can be removed and washed but yours looks fine so I would not mess with it. Also it is called a Service Cap (caps have bills and hats have brims). If you look under the leather sweat band you should find the date and what it is.
March 3, 20251 yr Author #6 So I found this stamped under the leather . Can anyone decipher it ? I think I see the date 3-18-19.. ? Maybe New York on the bottom ?
March 4, 20251 yr #7 I can't make out any more than you. There are two things you can try to make it more legible, first try using a black light that might bring it out more or try dampening it with a little water the ink will repel the water and may make it more legible. If those don't work there is not much you can do other than play around with different exposures on a digital camera but that takes a lot of time and skill. Even not being able to read it the style of the marking makes it a post-war.
March 4, 20251 yr #8 If you look at it really fast, it looks like 1948 (which would totally make sense for this particular model cap)
