It is on the pommel of a Kabar I bought off ebay. It and the kabar are supposed to be ww2 era but until I recieve the kabar not sure on the knife. 

Looks like someone glued an enamel DI to it.

 

I don’t think they used the DI during WW2.

Can we see the rest of the knife?  Not impossible, but unusual for a Ka-bar to make it to an Army unit - again, not unheard of.

 

 

The DUI is Vietnam era. It is not a long shot to believe that the WWII vintage knife wasn't used 20 years later by a Vietnam veteran.

Here are the ebay pictures I should have the knife in my hand in a day or two to give it a good once over. I can see the cross pin in one picture but cant see the pommel good on the other side. The USMC seems too deep but I kniw little to nothing about kabars.

Not a long shot at all, Allan - but unfortunately, to my eye, that is a commemorative Ka-bar manufactured well after the Vietnam War.  (You did not have the benefit of the pics when you posted).  

This is solely my neophyte opinion, which I am basing on the following - without the benefit of having it in-hand:

• Black plastic spacers
• Thick "USMC" on the ricasso in large font - large font should be thin, almost hairline
• Centerline of blade is off-center from the handle, which is a hallmark of the commemorative knives

Have to agree its a marriage of items. A more modern Kabar knife with a 502 enameled pin placed on th epommel. Still done by a 80s era vet? possible but with out having a link or chain of custody of th eknife one will neve rknow. I saw dozens of knives one summer when I was visiting Fort Campell. The pawn shops were full of knives, uniforms, boots etc. Many of the knives were commercial style knives like Shrade,Buck,Case, Kabar. The typical hunting patterns. Saw several Buck 110 folders where a prior owner had put a full-size set of jump wings on the wood handle or pinned a set of jump wins or air assault wings on the scabbard. Some had unit crest pinned to the scabbard closure flap. Some had army serial numbers engraved on the blades or electro penciled with number and name or initials.  Didnt have the money as a kid to buy a couple. There were several dozen jet pilot knives. I recall seeing new ones for sale a Bricks Supply Store also. Never got to a surplus store in the area but there was a large Fleamarket just past the base gate I think it was just across the Tennesse border. Lots of gear and uniforms there for sale

The more I look at it the less likely it is anything other than a post 76 kabar with a amazon DUI. Oh well live and learn. If it is a commemorative I will prob just cut the washers off, clean up the profile, rust blue it and put a new handle. Maybe do something fancy with the handle.

 

Did it come with a sheath?

Nope no sheath. It has ebay guarantee so I could return it since it was advertised as a ww2. Lady told me her husband bought it 20 years ago in seattle from a homeless vet in a parking lot market/sale. If the knife is in decent condition I will probably just refinsh it and make a sheath then give it to someone for xmas. I paid way too much for it it (160) but I let the emotion of the insignia not make me look hard at the knife till I had already bought it. I was just watching it and they sent me a make an offer and I jumped like a dummy. 

A cool knife, but probably not worth it for $160 (especially without the sheath)
