Can someone tell me which type buttons. Gilt or other that would have been worn with the white double breasted dress coat.. I believe it is an 8 button with 4 each side.. I know the dress blue jacket had the shiny brass buttons but unsure on the white jacket.. As far as time frame say 50’s.. Thanks forany help

28 line gold buttons—the same as Service Dress Blue. These are smaller than the 35 line worn on six button coats. A line in 1/40 of an inch.

The White jacket was actually never changed to the 6 button style and remained with the 8 buttons, until dropped in 1975(?). The buttons were removable for laundering reasons and are still used on the blue dinner dress jackets. They were used way back, on the enlisted “Blue Dress Jackets”, ( Monkey Jackets), of the 1833, 1883 era. That jacket may have been droppped sooner, I can’t recall right now, but same buttons none the less. 
 

I believe, that the reason they never bothered to change the white jacket to the 6 button style, like the blue jacket, was the basic lack of use/interest. After the introduction of Khakis, the white CPO uniform became a “Locker Queen”, drug out for “Ceremonial” occasions, ( like its replacement, the choker). I remember my dad’s buddies who were Chiefs, complained about them being useless all the time, as did I and my peers about the chokers.   But, given the choice of the 2, I much prefer the old CPO white coat, for looks and comfort.

And you got to wear the big ''ol cool CPO rate and hashmarks on the arm of the white coat  instead of those tiny little CPO pins on the collar of the choker.

Yeah. I think the reasoning behind not going with the crowd and hashmarks, was because they knew it was only going to be worn very rarely, so not worth the manufacturing and stocking if the sew vs on badges. I was a CPO for 13 years, I wore it 3 times. All for summer Change of Command Ceremonies.
