January 5, 20251 yr #3 Fond memories! I clearly remember the day of live hand Grenade training at Ft Polk in 1975. My turn and the training sergeant walked me thru the chest high trench to the "spot" where I would throw. He handed me the live grenade, I followed the proper throwing technique , pulled the pin and threw it. I neglected to duck down as I was supposed to as I wanted to sneak a peek at the explosion. The sergeant immediately picked up on that and threw me to the grown with great force! Yelling and cursing at me, he threw me off the range! 😂

January 6, 20251 yr Author #5 I was in Basic in March 1975, and I did not do well on the grenade range either. Before I could throw a live grenade you had to throw the practice grenades a certain distance. I managed all the training requirements and the hand grenade course, but I just could not get the distance because my throwing arm was toast by time we got to the live grenade throw. After what seems like a morning of throwing the grenade for distance I finally through a grenade that went over the minimal distance line to advance to the live grenade throw. The same scenario, after I through the live grenade I wanted to see where it landed. The sergeant yelled, grabbed me and face planted me into the dirt. I didn't even hear the explosion because he was yelling degrading obscenities in my exposed ear.
