Questions on M8A1 Scabbards

Hi all, I recently acquired the scabbard on the left for $10. As I understand it from researching here and elsewhere, the one on the left marked PWH makes it a Vietnam Era scabbard? It appears someone removed the hanger, unfortunately. I have had the one on the right for many years but never bothered to look at the markings. BM Co made WWII scabbards, yes? Were they always in OD green? Why is the one on the left black instead of green? The right one I have had rigged to my Vietnam Era gear, but is it actually a WWII one? Any info is appreciated. Thanks.

Eastw00d86,

Both scabbards came from the factory OD Green.  I have occasionally seen them painted black.  I have not heard of any military order to paint them black.  Painting the scabbard by individual Army units (usually OD) was very common, but as you can see some were painted black.  The PWH on the black scabbard stands for Philadelphia Work Home (for the blind). That's a whole other story.

The BM Co. is a WWII made scabbard, but is still appropriate for your Vietnam set up.  They didn't get thrown away until they were unusable.
