Hi. I don't collect these things usually and mainly collect modern us navy. These are the last two that I would appreciate opinions on. I considered these 80s or 90s so thought that these were ok. Are these original please? Thank you

Yes,  those are both original USN submarine patches.

 

For original examples of US Navy patches, troll through the Naval forum.  There are sections on most all vessels, stations, & squadrons, etc.

Thank you. I've only just started buying us navy items, mainly ball caps and uniform items. I know absolutely nothing about Vietnam period patches and probably won't buy anymore as, here in the UK, I don't think they're that easy to find. I also have difficulty deciding good and bad so will stick to modern.

Well, if you like Navy-related patches from the Vietnam War period, I would suggest checking out Japanese-made US ship patches on Ebay.  Those are pretty easy to tell if they are real for the period or not (just check out the examples here on the forum) and the prices tend to be very reasonable.   

The patches created by mom and pop embroidery shops in Asia will also tend to not have their backs and the loose threads there sealed with plastic or wax or whatever the ones produced in more industrial sources.  The poor buggers who are assigned Laundry and Morale Officer and such have to obtain the unit patches, coffee mugs, T-shirts, etc. somewhere and when overseas they often have to use local sources to do so.

 

A famous example is the 'Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club' patches which I believe originated in Subic Bay/Olangapo City at the request of aircraft carriers taking a break from the line on Yankee Station.  Upon their return to the States the patch was copied and sold by more established/professional patch makers. 

 

So again, the originality of such things are a matter of opinion.
