The cap looks legit WW2. Engineering piping. The patch could have been added but if it's got a good price, go for it.

Not museum approved but if you cut up some wool into tiny pieces and mix it with stitch witch powder, you can put the mix in the mothholes and apply a hot iron for a few seconds. It should look okay.

The patch is where the value is. Couldn't tell you what the patch is worth. Take a soft bristle toothbrush and give a rub on those stains for a few seconds. It should help. Maybe pull down the sides, then lay it out for an hour in the sun beforehand. Maybe, and this is a judgement call, try laundry wipes, too. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07YCYCTG4

Probably not worth much more than that honestly. It’s not a lose by any means, but I’m not sure you are getting a huge win.

Yes, I will do that. Seems like no one else is bidding right now so I might get it but if someone else bids i’m not gonna go over what I just bid. 

Walking away from stuff is an important part of collecting. One random piece with maybe no history is one thing. The entire trunk of stuff somebody gives you is another.

Don't ever use fabric glue on any military artifact regardless of age. It destroys any type of desirability, value, and historical significance an item has. Leave the item alone. Don't do it! There is nothing that irks me more than to purchase a important and typically expensive item of military clothing and find out some-one used fabric glue to repair a moth hole. Do it right or not at all. 

It was taught to me in a textile conservation class in 1985 so I just wanted to share. I mentioned it once before for an Ike jacket that was basically trash.

 

For an overseas cap alone with no provenance and in that condition, it's a consideration.

Any restoration or conservation should be: 1) reversable 2) not cause any harm to the item. It should be archival and chemically inert. 

I always say if you want it and don't care what it's worth make yourself happy and buy it. If you're buying it to resell than that's another story. I just bought a matching set of three DUI's. My dad wore at the beginning of WW2. I paid a premium for them, but I wanted them and have them now.  I made myself happy with the purchase and have no intentions of selling them. 

If your happy with the purchase that's all that matters....

If you actually end up buying / winning this cap then dealing with any existing larvae or eggs is the first requirement.  I regularly put woollen items in the deep freeze to deal with any possibility of little critters, I have a few nice caps sat in there this evening. 

 

Some may agree others may disagree but it's served me well over the years.

Agreed but if it's an item in poor condition with no provenance/connection to a veteran and it's something they made a million of, what I suggested may keep it around longer.
