September 8, 20241 yr #1 Hello - I have a US Navy field desk made by Herkert & Meisel and hoping to get some information on how it was manufactured. The corner edging appears to be metal, but in a couple of spots on the bottom edge, where the corner banding has disintegrated, it appears to be some type of cardboard or other heavy pressed paper product perhaps covered by some kind of epoxy or other paint? I've restored a couple of trunks and not run across this blend of materials. Having some idea of what I''m dealing with will help me pick the best way to preserve the desk. Pictures attached. I reached out to Herkert & Meisel directly on the off chance they can help but figure that is a long shot. All information/suggestions greatly appreciated! Thank you!
