Hey Guys, I've had this sign in my collection, made from an old can of some type for a few years now, The can was smashed when found, and it had the same info on both sides. We had to take it apart to flatten it. Anyway..What do you all think this is for? I'm thinking Command Post 28th forward Artillery..What do you think, does that make sense? My buddy has the other side and its in better shape than this side.

 

Oh..It looks like they used a nail to make the letters.

That makes sense..for info, the sign is 16" x 13" Thanks for the help.

IIRC I have heard of metal cans being marked that way. They could be placed by a road with a light in them, so drivers could see and read the sign, but anyone flying over couldn't see it due to the light only coming out of the small holes.

Don't remember where I saw that online, I'll post it if I can find it.

Often a master stencil would be made (like this) then by putting this over a signboard, pencil marks would be left by dotting each hole and then when pulling it off and you could connect the dots to reveal the numbers & letters. I have seen aircraft stencils done in this manner.
