September 30, 20232 yr #1 Purchased this as a grouping including navy flier wings marked AE Utica, lieutenant insignia with flat clutch and pair of later dog tags. Purchased at shop in New Hampshire. I have been trying to find information to support these go together. is there a database to look up serial number 491978? Ive read that the AE Co flier wings are uncommon make.
December 18, 20232 yr #2 According to the 4/1/1951 USNR Register, Richard I Van Allen (491978) was born in 1925, entered service 4/30/1943, and was an Ensign with a date of rank of 11/1/1946. Oddly, though, he does not appear in the 1949 USNR/USMCR Register.
January 3, 20242 yr #3 Looks like he went to NAS New York in November of 1944 for flight training, from the V5 program at William Smith College. He was still a S2c at this point. He would've gotten his wings when he was commissioned an Ensign in 1946.
