April 1, 20233 yr #1 Hi everyone. I recently (1 day ago) pulled the trigger on this 88th ID set, so it's not in hand yet. The item is listed as returnable, so I rolled the dice and will evaluate it closely when I have it in hand. I was alerted though that a few people had concerns, so I wanted to go ahead and get my inquiry out. I'll post more pics once I receive it. I'm just curious if it's a known fake that may have made the rounds in the past. Thanks for any and all feedback in advance.
April 2, 20233 yr #2 I wasn't sure about it when I first saw it. From the auction pictures it seemed like parts of the 88th insignia on both the helmet and liner were painted over areas where the factory paint had worn completely away. The style of the 88th insignia on both, but more so on the liner, seemed a bit off when compared to period photos as well. Once it comes in do a proper in hand inspection and then post some pics of the helmet and close ups of the paint in the helmets section. Should help give you a better idea of what your working with once it's in hand
April 10, 20233 yr Author #4 I ended up returning it. The liner was a double stamp inland / Firestone. I also didn't like the paint on the liner. The pot I am unsure of.
April 11, 20233 yr #6 You had it in hand so you're the best to judge but I think you probably made the right call. From here it looks to me like there are several areas where the white paint has been painted on top of bare steel which is a red flag for me. I'm not sure the double stamped firestone/inland would bother me unless the timeline on that didn't line up with something for the 88th. But from the auction photos I didn't like the liner paint.
April 11, 20233 yr Author #7 I took pics of the liner, but somehow overwrote them, or I'd share here. I have no hard feelings against the seller of this shell and I'm not stating its real or fake. I'm glad he offered it as refundable as it just wasn't right for me.
