This was brought back by James H Delahunt - he has inscribed it inside with his name and US Army Germany 1945

Done in pen he would have marked this post war so whoever in the family received  it knew when and where it was taken and the history of it kept. 
James Delahunt’s information is also listed below, he was a CPL during WW2. If anybody has any other information on him, please share :-) 

 

The helmet is in my opinion an attractive WW2 Luftwaffe Camo of trypical green and tan camouflage. 
The helmet is also named by the German Vet but it’s in pencil and difficult to see.

Agreed and thanks for the comments, it has a lot of wear even on the marker pen. 
I’m glad he did mark it as it has kept its history.

Great helmet! I’ve seen a few pieces marked with a marker like that and recently picked up a cool Vietnam war piece marked with a Sharpie….got me to look it up and Sharpies came out commercially in 1964.

Hope you have luck figuring out the unit your vet served in.

Im sure A lot of Vets marked items after the fact, also I can imagine as time went on maybe family members told dad or grandad to make a note of where it came from.

if anybody has any better research skills than me, I would be extremely grateful if they would help.

There are people in the US who put their names on everything they own.

 

They scratch it on, use labels, pens, markers and even engrave using a Dremel moto tool.

 

They do it in the event of theft.

Now that makes a lot of sense 

I'm in a "snarky" mood accounting it to December 26th and all it can bring.  

 

If the name on this helmet was "Dick Winters 506th PIR" everybody would be going crazy about this helmet. Even if it was done in a SHARPIE back in 2001.

 

So, let's also give Mr. Delahunt the Honor he deserves for binging a service member and a beloved Father.

Hey Archangel. I bet Niagara, NY has a historical society maybe reach out to them for old newspapers or the “men serving from the county” kinds of histories that are out there. Maybe you’ll get lucky about Mr. Delahunt.
