WW2 Musician Hat Emblem question

Hello

 

I was told by the owner that this was his grandfathers WW2 Army Musicians hat emblem.   ??  I thought this was a School hat emblem.  did they use these in WW2 on visor hats?

If you look in Emerson's book on US insignia and uniforms page 228 fig 13-25. You will find this badge listed as German made and used in the early 1950's.
