"Top Gun" HGU-33s on eBay

Featured Replies

Can anyone tell me about some of these HGU-33s that are appearing on eBay? All decked out as the original 'Maverick' helmets from Top Gun. The listing do say not for flight, etc, but are they actual HGU-33? Or a copy? The price seems to vary from USD$400-500.

Are they real?

Newly made. Never real or used by military. A repo prop for the fans.

When you say 'newly made', are they the same as a "real" HGU-33 or are they a cheaply made knock-off and not worth the money?

The quality is unknown as I have not seen one in person. I do not know if they are fiber glass or a plastic. As to the cheaply made part.. Cheap labor, non regulated materials, no health a safety standards. Find an HGU shell , find a visor and cut it down to look like a 33 visor, paint it. I believe the decals are available on Etsy. You could probably do it cheaper than one already made. It would be a real helmet which is a plus.

Hmm- thanks. I'll give it a miss. I found a HGU-26 locally that I want, so I'll spend the money trying to get that off of eBay. The seller also has a HGU-2A/P shell, and I might look at getting that as well (or in place of, if I don't win the auction). I'll see if I can actually take a helmet from shell / parts to something that I wouldn't be embarrassed to show publicly.

They are 100% replica parts. No authentic helmet parts
