July 1, 20224 yr #1 Picked up this M1 Navy Helmet With Hawley Liner and wondering what the letters and numbers that are painted on the front mean? Also was it common to paint the helmet liner also navy blue color? Many thanks! Regards, Drew
July 1, 20224 yr #4 I believe it indicates "Mount 43". A capital ship would have numerous AAA mounts. On an Iowa class battleship for example, 20 quad-40mm mounts and 49 20 mm mounts on average. Helmets for the gun crew would be stored at the mount and marked accordingly.
